Tigers Weekend Recap (Oct. 10‑12)

Men’s Basketball

The Tigers were in Antigonish, NS this weekend competing in the StFX Invitational. In their first game on Friday against the Cape Breton Capers, the Tigers held a two-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, but the Capers turned it on late and outscored the Tigers 26-11 to go on to win 74-61. The Tigers offence couldn’t find their groove in the second half, as they shot just 21.6% from the field. Devon Stedman, who fouled out of the game late in the fourth quarter, led the Tigers with 13 points and eight boards. Veteran floor general Ritchie Kanza Mata had 13 points and seven boards to go along with three assists while Sven Stammberger added seven points and seven rebounds.

On Saturday, head coach Rick Plato faced his former team, the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics. First-year Cedric Sanogo led all players with a game-high 20 points and Stammberger recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds as the Tigers cruised to a 81-58 win.

They’ll be back on the court when they host Laurier in more pre-season action at the Dalplex this Thursday at 8:00pm.

Women’s Cross Country

The women’s team narrowly missed out on reaching the top of the podium, finishing just six points off the lead for a second-place finish at the StFX Interlock Invitational this Saturday. Ellen Chappell led all AUS runners with a third-place finish just 20 seconds off the lead. The Tigers were also the only team with any runners in the top ten as Brittany MacArthur and Maddy Crowell finished ninth and tenth, respectively.

Be sure to catch the Tigers in action at the AUS Championship on October 25 at Point Pleasant Park when they try to win their fourth championship in the last five years.

Men’s Cross Country

The Tigers came away with a third-place finish at the StFX Interlock Invitational, finishing second among AUS squads. Matt McNeil led the way for the Tigers with a ninth place finish, with Matthias Mueller just behind him in 13th.  Jake Wing, Nick Wood and Will Russell all finished in the top 30 with 17th, 22nd and 29th place finishes, respectively. Graeme Wach and Angus MacIntosh rounded things out for the Tigers, finishing in 37th and 42nd, respectively.

This is the last tune-up race in anticipation of the 2014 AUS Championship at Point Pleasant Park on October 25, as the Tigers look to win their first championship since 2010.

Men’s Hockey

The Tigers couldn’t skate away with a win in their home opener, losing 4-0 to the Acadia Axemen on Saturday night. The Axemen built up a three-goal lead by the second period and added another in the third to seal the victory. First-year goalie Corbin Boes made 49 saves in the loss for the Tigers, who couldn’t capitalize on the power play, going 0-6 on the night.

The Tigers will face off against the UNB Varsity Reds on Friday in Fredericton at 7:00pm.

Men’s Volleyball

The Tigers hosted a two-game set against Queen’s this weekend, and kicked it off with a dominant 3-0 victory on Sunday. Bryan Duquette looked to be in mid-season form as he led the team with 14 kills, while Adam Sandeson had 10 digs in the win.

On Monday, they split the first two sets before grinding out two straight sets to take the game 3-1. It was Kristen O’Brien’s turn to take the spotlight as he led the Tigers with an impressive 16 kills to go along with 8 digs.

The Tigers will head to Memorial University on October 24th for the first AUS-RSEQ Interlock event of the season. They’ll kick things off against the Montreal Carabins at 6:00pm.
