DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Summer SEASIDE program, Biology Department

PAY RATE: as per CUPE agreement

DATES OF EMPLOYMENT: 17 July 2023 – 16 Aug 2023

WORK ASSIGNMENT: Assist the instructor, Laura deGelleke, with the field- and lab-intensive summer class, OCEA /BIOL /MARI 3003.03, Introduction to Field Oceanography. Meets all day Mon-Fri, from July 24 – Aug 10, 2023. Specific duties include: a) Preparation, participation and assistance with field sampling onboard 50 foot research boat on day trips in coastal waters; b) Preparation, participation and assistance with laboratory analyses; c) Answering student questions. The position requires preparation during the week prior to the first class, considerable involvement for the duration of the class, and clean up and organization of equipment in the days after the class is over. 

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: BSc in Ocean Sciences, Marine Biology or a related field. The ideal candidate will have a graduate degree completed or in progress in Oceanography with the satisfactory completion of two of the four core Oceanography courses (i.e. Biological, Geological, Chemical, or Physical Oceanography) in addition to relevant experience in the field and lab, including water and benthos sampling from small research ships and common laboratory analyses (e.g. sieving, microscopy, plankton counting, nutrient analyses, chlorophyll analyses). Candidates must be available the week before the class begins to help with preparation. Candidates must provide up to date (within last 3 years) Standard First Aid with CPR certification or be willing to complete a certification course before the position begins.
