WORK ASSIGNMENT:  One TA position is available to assist the instructor (Dr. Alana Westwood) with the fall class ENVI5504/MGMT4504, Management of Resources and the Environment. This in-person course is a required cornerstone in the Master of Resource and Environmental Management (MREM) program at the School for Resource and Environmental Studies and is taken by all first-year students in that program. It is also cross-listed with ENVI4504.03 in the Bachelor of Management program in the Faculty of Management. This course draws from a number of academic disciplines on campus and covers a wide range of topics pertaining to management of resources and the environment. Topics will include ecosystem management, water management, fire management, pollution, forest management, conservation, food systems, and challenges in sustainability.

The TA will be responsible for providing instruction to supplement the instructor’s knowledge, assisting with design of course elements, answering student questions, and grading. Training will be provided for all duties as well as grading calibration undertaken with the instructor.

This course also has several field trips (all day on Wednesdays). The TA may join field trips as a learning experience if they wish but these will not count towards duties.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

1.     Keeping regular communication with the instructor and students using a Microsoft Teams group and Teams chat;

2.     Using Brightspace to assist with administration of the course;

3.     Developing and delivering material for three lecture slots (2h50 minutes) on management topics of the TA’s speciality which are complementary to the instructor’s expertise (e.g. pollution management, marine management, food systems, Indigenous-led management, industrial sustainability, etc.);

4.     Developing and delivering three “labs” (2h 50 minutes) on topics of the TA’s choice to support leadership in environmental management (e.g. communications and media, facilitation, scientific writing, inclusion, conflict resolution, numeracy, word processor proficiency, etc.);

5.     Support assessment design;

6.     Grading assignments.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:

The TA must be:

·       Entering at least the second year of a master’s program, be enrolled in a PhD program, and/or be the holder of a graduate degree in a relevant discipline;

·       Able to demonstrate a record of expertise (e.g. peer-reviewed publications, work experience, relevant degree, lived experience, etc.) in relevant topics to demonstrate ability to develop and deliver relevant content;

·       Reliable, energetic, and enthusiastic about the course;

·       Comfortable presenting to, and facilitating discussion among, graduate and undergraduate students;

·       Available during the fall semester (Sept 6-Dec 7) for two Wednesday morning periods and two Wednesday afternoon periods to deliver lectures and labs. Dates will be agreed upon with the instructor.

Preferences will be given for holders of existing master’s degrees or PhD candidates, as well as for candidates with previous TA experience. As the instructor’s speciality areas are terrestrial management and environmental impact assessment, preference will be given to a TA with complementary disciplinary expertise who can provide lectures in areas such as pollution management, marine management, food systems management, and/or industrial management.
