WORK ASSIGNMENT: The Teaching Assistant (TA) will be responsible for providing support for SUST 3301.03 ‘Local Approaches to Sustainability’. This field course is a part of the undergraduate program in Environment, Sustainability and Society (ESS) within the College of Sustainability.

The TA will be responsible for assisting the course instructors with supervision of two off-campus site visits, including the transportation of students as a driver of a rental vehicle, as well as grading and providing feedback on some student assessments. The TA must be available for several full-day (8 hour) commitments on the days of the field site visits between August 17th and 30th (these dates are currently TBD in consultation with our community partners). It is essential that the TA work collaboratively with the course instructors.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Applicants must be Dalhousie students or recent (2 years) graduates. Applicants must have experience and a background in a field related to ESS. Experience with teaching, facilitation and marking is an asset. The TA must have a valid driver’s license and be at least 21 years of age. The TA must be highly proficient in written communication in the English language. Experienced using Brightspace learning software as a part of a course teaching team is also an asset. WORK ASSIGNMENT: Lecture component Teaching Assistants will be responsible for supporting the online delivery of SUST 1000.06 “What is Sustainability?”, during the Fall 2022 term. This class is part of the innovative undergraduate program in Environment, Sustainability and Society (ESS) offered by the College of Sustainability. Core courses in the ESS program draw from virtually every academic discipline on campus and take an issues-based and trans-disciplinary approach to curriculum in order to understand the realities behind complex sustainability issues.

In Fall 2022, students have the option to take SUST 1000 online. The in-person lectures will be delivered synchronously by live-stream, giving online students the opportunity to participate in the lecture in real-time. The Lecture-TA will provide in-class technical support to live-stream and record the lectures and collect online student questions and discussion. The Lecture-TA will also post the recorded lectures for asynchronous viewing by online students.

Lecture-TAs must be comfortable with video recording (MS Teams and Zoom) and post-production for dissemination via BrightSpace. Excellent English communication skills and background related to Environment, Sustainability and Society are required to effectively moderate student questions. 

It is essential that TAs work collaboratively with the course instructors. TAs report directly to the course instructors and the Academic Advisor and Program Manager in the College of Sustainability.

WORK ASSIGNMENT: SUST 1000 literacy diagnostic markers will grade two rounds of assignments. Round 1 will be near the beginning of the term (late Sept. - early Oct.), and Round 2 will be at the end of the term (second week of December). Please be sure that you can commit roughly 16 hours of marking time for each one-week round of marking (32 hours total) when applying to one of these four positions. Markers must work collaboratively with each other and with course instructors to calibrate their grading. Markers must be available for a two-hour online training session, date TBD in communication with the selected applicants. Payment is hourly as per CUPE Collective Agreement, but it is anticipated that this position will take 34 hours (32 hours marking and two hours online training/marking calibration). These positions will be entirely remote and do not require physical presence on campus.

Markers report directly to the Academic Advisor and Program Manager in the College of Sustainability.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Successful applicants must be senior undergraduate, graduate or professional students at Dalhousie University or recent (less than 2 years) Dalhousie graduates. Applicants must have experience in literacy and/or writing coaching, as well as a background in a field related to Environment, Sustainability and Society. Experience with marking is an asset, as well as experience using Brightspace as a TA or marker. Relevant experience must be described in the application. Markers must attend all lectures (Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:30 am – 1:00 pm and Thursdays 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm) and must read all assigned readings.

Payment is hourly as per CUPE collective Agreement, but it is anticipated that this position will take 90 to 120 hours. Markers must work collaboratively with each other and with course instructors to develop exam questions, answer keys, and calibrate their grading.

Markers report directly to the course instructors and the Academic Advisor and Program Manager in the College of Sustainability.

WORK ASSIGNMENT: Tutorial Teaching Assistants will be responsible for leading in-person or online tutorials and providing support for SUST 1000.06 “What is Sustainability?”. In the Fall 2022 term, students have the option to register for in-person tutorials or online tutorials. Please clearly specify your preference (or no preference) for leading tutorials in-person or online in your application.

Each Teaching Assistant will lead one 90-minute tutorial per week designed by the course instructors. TAs will be required to prepare for tutorials by reviewing the tutorial instructions, assigned readings, and course lecture materials. Each TA will be responsible for preparing the resources and training materials for one tutorial, in consultation with the course instructors, and will lead the associated tutorial preparation session. 

TAs will grade written assignments and student participation for approximately 20-22 students (one tutorial section). TAs will be expected to provide constructive feedback on all writing assignments, and lead students in lively discussions on a variety of topics. SUST 1000 satisfies the Dalhousie Writing Requirement, so activities and assignments aimed at improving writing proficiency are a significant component of the overall tutorial curriculum. Assignments include two short position papers, four lecture reflections, and a major research paper in several stages. 

TAs are required to attend a 2-hour orientation and training session at the start of the term as well as mandatory 1-hour team meetings every week throughout the term, to be scheduled in August. TAs must also attend the weekly ESS Lecture Series on Thursday evenings, 7:00 – 9:00 pm. 

It is essential that TAs work collaboratively with the course instructors and fellow teaching assistants. TAs report directly to the course instructors and the Academic Advisor and Program Manager in the College of Sustainability.

WORK ASSIGNMENT: Tutorial Teaching Assistants will be responsible for leading tutorials and providing support for SUST 2000.06 “Local Governance, Citizen Engagement and Sustainability”. In the Fall 2022 term, students have the option to register for in-person tutorials or online tutorials. Please clearly specify your preference (or no preference) for leading tutorials in-person or online in your application.

Each Teaching Assistant will assist about 20 students with tutorial activities using a guided Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach. Each TA will lead one 2-hour tutorial each week. TAs will be required to: 

• prepare for tutorials, 

• keep up with the class readings, 

• lead student discussions on a variety of topics related to their projects,

• keep accurate records of attendance and grades, 

• will be responsible for grade entry in the Brightspace gradebook, 

• assign groups in Brightspace for each of the 3 modules.

Each Teaching Assistant will grade three individual assignments and three individual reflections for their tutorial section. TAs will also help grade the final exam and must be available for the entire final exam period, 9 - 20 December 2022. The final exam schedule will be posted on October 1st.

TAs will be required to attend a training session at the start of term and weekly meetings with course instructors throughout the term. Weekly meeting schedule will be determined in consultation with the successful applicants in August.

The Teaching assistant is expected to come to Wednesday classes (4:05-5:25pm) on Wednesdays and help organize and co-lead class discussions. 

CLASS OVERVIEW:

This course explores the rapidly growing market of ESG investing. The class begins with an overview of general approaches to financial investing, combined with an examination of how ESG investing fits into these markets. Students will then practically apply this by researching, designing, implementing, and trading their own ESG investment portfolios throughout the semester. The course will also explore project evaluation for ESG initiatives, allowing students to better understand which offer the best opportunities for investment while creating the greatest impact. Familiarity with these concepts and background in Economics or Finance are required. Primary learning objectives are: 

1. Knowledge of how investing in financial markets works and where ESG investments fit into these existing markets

2. An understanding of how existing financial systems can be reordered to deliver funding for projects that   create positive environmental and social impacts

3. How to better assess and screen ESG projects based on their merits rather than their claims.

4. Overall competencies in systems thinking, managing complexity, project evaluation and assessment

Payment is hourly as per CUPE Collective Agreement. It is anticipated that this position will take up to 30 hours. It is essential that the Marker work collaboratively with the course instructor.

In Fall 2022, students have the option to take SUST 4001 online. The in-person lectures will be delivered synchronously by live-stream, giving online students the opportunity to participate in the lecture in real-time. The Lecture-TA will provide in-class technical support to live-stream and record the lectures and collect online student questions and discussion. The Lecture-TA will also post the recorded lectures for asynchronous viewing by online students.

Lecture-TAs must be comfortable with video recording (MS Teams and Zoom) and post-production for dissemination via BrightSpace. Excellent English communication skills and background related to Environment, Sustainability and Society are required to effectively moderate student questions.

WORK ASSIGNMENT: Teaching Assistants are responsible for leading group work sessions and providing support for SUST 4001 and SUST 4002: “Environment, Sustainability and Society Capstone.” This fourth-year class is part of the ESS (Environment, Sustainability and Society) undergraduate program. Core courses in the ESS program draw from virtually every academic discipline on campus and take an experiential and trans-disciplinary approach in order to understand the realities behind complex sustainability issues. This culminating class offers students the experience of working on a wide variety of sustainability issues with an external client (community groups, businesses, not-for-profit organizations, government departments etc.).

Capstone Teaching Assistants are required to meet online with small groups during tutorial times each week. In addition, responsibilities include preparing for tutorials, assessing student participation and assisting in the grading of some course assignments. TAs guide student teams through the various stages of “knowledge mobilization projects” — response to RFPs (Request for Proposals), literature review, research methods, and the delivery of an oral presentation and written reports to clients. TAs are expected to provide significant and constructive feedback on written assignments.

It is essential that TAs work collaboratively with the course instructors, fellow teaching assistants and College staff. TAs are required to participate in weekly instructional team meeting to be scheduled in August. TAs must be available during the class times on Monday, Wednesday and Friday 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm in both Fall and Winter terms. TAs report directly to the course instructors and the Academic Advisor and Program Manager in the College of Sustainability.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Applicants must be graduate or professional students at Dalhousie University or recent (2 years) alumni. These will occur on Tuesdays 5:30 – 8:30 pm. The TA will grade and provide feedback to undergraduate students on pre and post position papers and will provide assistance to students who request help. The TA will grade student participation and will read all required readings. The TA will also assist Instructor with managing the Brightspace site for the course.

WORK ASSIGNMENT: Teaching Assistant will be responsible for supporting the online delivery of the ESS Lecture Series during the Fall 2022 term. 

The ESS Lecture Series features diverse guests speaking about sustainability from all perspectives. The Lecture Series will be delivered in-person with live-streaming online to facilitate a wider audience. The TA will provide in-class technical support to live-stream the lectures; collect online questions from students and members of the public; and facilitate online discussion. When available/applicable the TA will also post lecturers’ slides to Brightspace in advance of the live lecture.  When the edited videos of the lectures are available  for asynchronous viewing  (usually on the subsequent Monday to the Thursday lecture) the TA will post an announcement to the relevant SUST courses with a link to the College’s Vimeo channel. The TA will also be responsible for curating the AV equipment which is shared by other SUST courses.

The successful applicant must be comfortable with AV equipment (specific training will be provided), Zoom, Teams, Vimeo, and BrightSpace. Excellent English communication skills and background related to Environment, Sustainability and Society are required to effectively moderate student questions.
