One‑Minute Meeting with Gwen Bartleman

Posted by Communications, Marketing and Creative Services on May 5, 2022 in Community Highlights

A handful of questions, each answered in 150 words or less. One-Minute Meeting is a quick, easy way to get to know more about your colleagues.

Today's meeting is with Gwen Bartleman, Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) Administrator in the Faculty of Medicine.

What’s your favourite thing about working at Dal?

The people! There is such passion and dedication in the Faculty of Medicine, especially those students, staff and faculty that are working toward greater equity, diversity and inclusion within systems, spaces and places. The students and my colleagues inspire me every day. I also value our close relationship with our sister campus in Saint John, as we form 2 parts of the same whole. One of my favourite equations is DMNS (Dal Medicine Nova Scotia) + DMNB (Dal Medicine New Brunswick) = UGME.

What’s the most surprising thing we might see on your resume/cv?

I began my career in the not-for-profit, theatre & arts world.

What is one daily habit you've adopted that you feel has benefitted you in your work?

My daily habit is reading, as the benefits this brings are invaluable. Reading really fills my tank! The texts that I return to time and again include James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time & Go Tell It On The Mountain; Frantz Fanon’s The Wretched of The Earth and June Jordan’s Directed by Desire: The Collected Poems. I am currently reading Sara Ahmed’s Complaint!

When you're feeling tired out, what is your go-to strategy for regaining balance?

Step 1: I listen to some good tunes to re/find my joy and it always helps me to dance it out. Recently, I introduced a little thing called the Song of the Day. When we are working on campus, one of the staff in the UGME/DMNS office chooses the song of the day and we enjoy this tune together.  Step 2: I talk to my wife! She gives the best advice.

Is there a quote that motivates you?

“It is certain, in any case, that ignorance, allied with power, is the most ferocious enemy justice can have.”
― James Baldwin
