Invitation to participate in a culturally responsive teaching study

Posted by Rowe School of Business (Faculty of Management) on January 14, 2022 in General Announcements

Culturally Responsive Teaching Project

We invite you to take part in a research study being conducted by Drs. Scott Comber, Jenny Baechler, Sandra Toze, Melanie Zurba, and Lisette Wilson from the Faculty of Management (FoM).

The objective of this project is to engage faculty (including limited term and contract instructors) to learn about and understand their Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) practices. CRT practices connect academics to students’ daily lives, cultural background, and concerns in ways that support engagement, achievement, and empowerment.

The framework guiding this research is drawn from the first competency of Muñiz’s framework (2020), which is to reflect on one’s cultural lens. We believe faculty, who can reflect weekly, using structured, critical reflective questions regarding CRT competencies may:

  • increase their knowledge regarding CRT practices,
  • change some of the ways they interact and teach students in ways that are CRT aware,
  • disseminate their knowledge to students in their classrooms and other faculty and staff, and
  • develop their capacity in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

Your participation in this research is entirely voluntary, and your identity will always be kept confidential.

If you decide to participate in this research, you will be asked to:

  1. Attend a short meeting (online) in January to learn more about the project and ask any questions.

  2. Document insights about your teaching over 10 weeks and submit weekly online reflections via Opinio survey software (each reflection should take about 20-30 minutes each week).

  3. Complete a short Opinio survey three times (first weeks of teaching, mid-way, and at the end of the term). The first survey should take about 10 – 15 minutes, and the other two about 20 - 30 minutes each.

If you would like to learn more about the study, please contact Scott Comber, Rowe School of Business, Faculty of Management, Dalhousie (scott.comber@dal.ca;  902-494-7820).

If you would like to participate in this study, please contact Lisette Wilson (Lisette.wilson@dal.ca) by Tuesday, January 18, 2022, and a consent letter will be emailed to you.

Thank you for your time and interest,

Scott and the CRT research team (Jenny, Sandra, Melanie, Liz)
