Position Title:                        Graduate Student Trainees to Help Plan an International Black Health Conference (2 graduate students required)

                       

Position Start Date:              March 1st, 2022

 

Position End Date:                March 1st, 2023

 

Total Project Hours:            250 hours for each graduate student.

 

Pay Rate:                               $22.60/hr ($20/hr plus 13% fringe benefits)

 

Qualifications:                       Applicants must self-identify as persons of Black/African descent with lived experience, and be currently enrolled in a university graduate program in Nova Scotia

Position Description:

Dr. Ingrid Waldron (Professor & HOPE Chair in Peace and Health, Faculty of Humanities, McMaster University) is looking to hire two (2) graduate students of African descent at a university in Nova Scotia, who will be trained to help plan a three-day International Black Health Conference in the fall of 2022. The conference is being organized by Dr. Waldron, the Nova Scotia Decade for People of African Descent (NSDPAD), and the Improving the Health Outcomes of People of African Descent Flagship at the Healthy Populations Institute (HPI) at Dalhousie University.

As a Graduate Student Trainee on this project, you will be responsible for the following:

·      Helping to organize the three-day conference, including communicating with the keynote speakers and other speakers to finalize arrange flights and accommodations and to address questions and concerns; developing conference registration forms, speaker bios, pre- and post-evaluation/feedback forms, the script for conference MC, and the promotional poster and other promotional material; and promoting the conference through social media, email and the media.

·      Scheduling and organizing team meetings, developing and sending out meeting agendas, and attending and taking minutes at team meetings to help plan the conference.

·      Attending the three-day conference to register attendees at the registration desk, disseminate the pre- and post-evaluation/feedback forms to attendees, and to take notes on the presentations and table talks throughout the three-day conference.

·      Supporting knowledge mobilization activities after the conference, including helping to write the final conference report using the conference notes and other information, co-authoring articles for publications in journals, and sharing the symposium report on social media, through email, and at community-based organizations.

·      Helping to develop partnerships with clinicians, health and other policymakers, community organizations, community members, and faculty/researchers after the conference for follow-up activities related to implementing best practice approaches for addressing health disparities in Black Nova Scotian communities.
