Imhotep’s Legacy Academy is a university-community partnership that seeks to improve on the representation of African Canadians in science professions by providing opportunities for young learners of African descent to engage in activities designed to strengthen their science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) aptitude.

First Lego League Program Coordinator Part-time 8-10hrs/wk

​POSITION PROFILE
Reporting to the Executive Director, the FLL Robotics Program Coordinator is responsible for the effective delivery and management of the FIRST LEGO League Robotics After-School Program at ILA school sites in Halifax or Truro (or virtually, COVID-continent). The successful candidate will recruit and develop team coaches, organize weekly Robotics classes for students, and prepare schoolteams for Regional FLL Competitions. They will also involve teams in various Robot Building and Programming workshops, camps and public presentations.

General Duties
▪Strong program coordination and organization skills
▪Demonstrated aptitude in one or more STEM subjects: Math, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science
▪Demonstrated experience in mentoring/tutoring youth
▪Ability to work with little supervision
▪Strong oral communication skills​

Position Requirements
•Schedules once per week Robotics classes at participating ILA school sites (or virtually, COVID-contigent)
•Coordinates all Program reporting and record-keeping to FIRST LEGO League and ILA Office
•Facilitates all aspects of team preparation for FLL competition including parent and school permissions, transportation,refreshments, team uniforms, fundraising etc.
•Manages the FLL Robotics Program budget
•Coordinates efforts to promote and develop ILA’s Robotics Program
•Organizes ILA student participation in other Robotics activities and special events (camps, workshops etc.)​

​POSITION PROFILE
Reporting to the FLL Program Coordinator, the FLL Program Mentor/Tutor is responsible for the effective delivery of the FIRST LEGO League Robotics Program to ILA participants at Halifax or Truro (or virtually, COVID-contingent). The FLL Mentor will guidean ILA student team towards building and programming a LEGO robot to compete in Regional FLL Competitions. He/She will also involve students in various robot building and programming workshops, camps and public presentations. 

General Duties
▪Ability to motivate junior high school students
▪Strong program coordination and organization skills
▪Demonstrated aptitude in one or more STEM subjects: Math and Computer Science
▪Interest in robot building and programming
▪Demonstrated experience in mentoring/tutoring youth
▪Ability to work with little supervision
▪Strong oral communication skills
▪Indicate the weekday(s) you are available from 2:30pm

Position Requirements
•Conducts once per week classes on robot building and programming as part of ILA’s FIRST LEGO League Program
•Selects and coaches an official ILA Robotics team to participate in FLL Regional Competitions
•Facilitates all aspects of team preparation for competition including parent and school permissions, transportation,refreshments, team uniforms, fundraising etc.
•Provides tutoring in Math and Science to program participants when needed.

ILA Coding Coordinator (CODING & ROBOTICS)

​POSITION PROFILE
The ILA Coding Program is designed to provide hands-on basic computer literacy training and computer programming training to youth ages 14 to 20 years old in the Black and minority communities. Its purpose is to build their minds, knowledge, and skills while encouraging participation in higher education and equipping them for the possibility of gaining employment or pursuing entrepreneurship.

The ILA Coding Coordinator is responsible for planning and coordinating the delivery of coding instruction modules and programming activities at local program sites (or virtually, COVID-contingent). She/he supervises the ILA Coding Mentor in thedelivery of once-per-week sessions. She/he liaises with school administrators, participants’ parents/guardians, and other stakeholders in an effort to facilitate the successful delivery of program objectives.

General Duties
•Act as a key contributor to delivering content and educational lesson plans for use in a classroom setting for the ILACoding Program.
•Provides supervision and guidance to the ILA Coding Mentor, developing a strong teaching team to achieve programgoals.
•Ensures the ILA Coding Mentor is provided with all resources and intellectual support needed.
•Builds and maintains a positive learning environment for student participants at program sites.
•Ensures efficient recording-keeping of participant data and completes all required work-activity reports and evaluations.
•Networks with all stakeholders to strengthen and enhance Program objectives.
•Ensures that both STEM education and the ILA vision are reinforced in all Program activities.

Position Requirements
•Completed at least one year of a Computer Science post-secondary education.
•Proficiency in more than one programing language such as Python, Java, C++ etc.
•Experience with computer coding/programming terminology, syntax, structure.
•Knowledge of computer hardware, operating systems, and networking basics.
•Past experience in mentoring/tutoring youth.
•Ability to articulate programming concepts in terms suitable to youth ages 14 to 20 years old.
•Ability to deliver exceptional work under little supervision.
•Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
•Must review and provide constructive feedback to Mentor regarding their delivery.​

Virtual School Mentor/Tutor Part-time (6-8 hrs/wk)

POSITION PROFILE
The Virtual School Program (VSP) Mentor/Tutor provides online and person to person (COVID-contingent) Math and Sciencetutoring of students of African heritage at the High School level (Grades 10-12).

General Duties
▪Provide Math and Science tutorials to student participants on a weekly basis
▪Prepares educational materials and information that facilitates the provision of tutorial assistance to student participants
▪Gauges academic progress of student participants
▪Establishes relationships and linkages with stakeholders including students, school administrators, teachers,
▪Parents/guardians.
▪Participates in workshops and special events that promote the Virtual School Program in the community

Position Requirements
•Proficiency in one or more STEM subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics)
•Motivated
•Strong teaching skills
•Good oral skills; Ability to break down Math and Science concepts into simple language
•Ability to relate to high school students
•Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to create an effective teaching team

She/He supervises Program Mentors/Tutors in the delivery of once-per-week classes and tutorials at selected sites (or virtually, COVID-contingent). She/He liaises with the schooladministrators, participants’ parents/guardians, and other stakeholders to facilitate the successful delivery of program objectives.

General Duties
▪Provides supervision and guidance to the Program Mentors/Tutors, developing a strong teaching team to achieve theprogram goals
▪Ensures Program Mentors/Tutors are provided with all resource and intellectual support needed to carry out their roles
▪Builds and maintains a positive learning environment for student participants at ILA school sites
▪Integrates the role of the Junior Program Officer with Program staff, Program participants and Program activities.
▪Ensures efficient recording-keeping of participant data and completes all required Program site work activity reportsand evaluations.
▪Networks with all stakeholders to strengthen and enhance Program objectives.
▪Creates mechanisms to ensure both STEM education and ILA’s organization vision are reinforced in all Programactivities.

Position Requirements
▪Demonstrated aptitude in one or more STEM subjects: Math, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering.
▪Ability to plan, manage and execute a ‘hands-on’ afterschool educational program.
▪Past experience in mentoring/tutoring youth.
▪Strong oral and written communication skills.

The After-School Program Mentor will guide ILA studentparticipants through an organized program of science experiment presentations, tutorials and leadership building activities that strengthen students academically and culturally. 

General Duties
▪Ability to motivate junior high school students
▪Demonstrated aptitude in one or more STEM subjects: Math, Physics, Biology, Chemistry,
▪Demonstrated experience in mentoring/tutoring youth
▪Good presentation skills; Engaging personality
▪Ability to work with little supervision
▪Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to create an effective teaching team
▪Knowledge of African Nova Scotian history and culture an asset

Position Requirements
•Conducts once per week classes presenting science and math experiments and activities
•Provides school curriculum-related tutoring in math and science to student participants when needed.
•Facilitates all aspects of student participation in the After-School Program including establishing relationships withparents/guardians, school administrators, teachers and community.
•Organizes student participation in related school and community activities and special events (math camps, science fairs,field trips).
