Children in grade four needed for online study

Posted by Psychology and Neuroscience, Faculty of Science on April 7, 2021 in General Announcements

Greetings from the Language and Literacy Lab at Dalhousie!

We are looking for children in Grade 4 to help us out by completing some reading and language skills activities online with a Language and Literacy Lab team member. For example, children might be asked to rearrange muddled sentences and make decisions about meanings of words.

By taking part, your child will help us ensure the activities are reliable and fun — the best that they can possibly be. These high-quality activities will then be used in a separate multi-year study designed to better understand how children’s language skills are related to their reading comprehension across the elementary grades.

The activities will take no more than 45 minutes and can be completed online from home.

To take part, you will need:

  • A stable internet connection.

  • A desktop computer or laptop that connects to the internet and can be used for video conferencing. Devices must be equipped with a camera as well as audio input and output. Some devices have these abilities built in while others require the addition of a webcam or a microphone.

  • A quiet room and/or headphones to decrease distractions.

Children who take part will receive a certificate via email recognizing their contribution to research. Parents/guardians will also have the option of receiving information on their child’s individualized word reading ability. Please note that this information will provide you with a single snapshot of your child’s word reading ability and should be considered in relation to other indicators of your child’s development. The information provided cannot be used for diagnostic purposes.
