Job Description
Responsibilities:
Reporting to Dr. Stefanie Colombo
(Assistant Professor) and the Aquarium Systems Manager, the candidate will be
responsible for the management of study with Atlantic salmon, investigating the
impact of climate change on fatty acid metabolism.  The candidate will be responsible for daily
feeding of the fish and accurately reporting data and general activities.  You will work in cooperation with unit
personnel to identify fish health and welfare issues and follow directives
provided by the attending Veterinarian. The candidate will be actively involved
in sampling the fish for growth measurements and tissue samples relevant to the
study.
 
Qualifications:
The candidate will be enrolled
full-time in a Bachelor of Science program. A major in Aquaculture would be an
asset, but majors in Animal Science, Marine Biology or Biology will be
accepted.  You have demonstrated strong
record keeping skills, an ability to work in a team and with minimal
supervision.  You have strong observation
skills, effectively time manage multiple tasks and have excellent verbal and
written communication skills.  The candidate
must occupy, or be willing to obtain, certificates for WHIMIS, Occupational
Health and Safety, Standard First Aid, and Animal Care.  
 
Work Term Outcomes:
This position is needed to
undertake a research study at the Aquaculture Lab, Dalhousie University,
Faculty of Agriculture.  The Aquaculture Lab
is a wet aquarium lab that stocks more than 12 species of fish and shellfish,
and 10 cultures of marine micro-algae.
Outcomes include:
· Daily husbandry of Atlantic salmon in a recirculating aquaculture
system
· Increased competency handling live aquatic animals
· Strong record of reporting data and observations
· Strong record of clear communication with Aquaculture Centre staff
· Dissection and ability to collect samples for future analyses in a
research study
 
Salary:
$15.00/hr - $17.00/hr (depending on experience) x 35
hours per week (maximum)
Start Date:  September 1, 2020                         End Date:  December
18, 2020
 
Other:
Must be willing to work in Truro daily
for the fall semester. Typical work schedule is Monday to Friday,
8:30am-4:30pm.
