DETAILS OF POSITION: PSYO/NESC 3371 Neuroscience Laboratory II is an introduction to several techniques used in contemporary neuroscience. Students work under supervision separately or in groups of 2 or 3 in regular labs that introduce neuroanatomical analyses using the following: Golgi impregnation, immunocytochemistry, dye-tracing of connections, electron microscopy of the retina, and neurotransmitter determinations using HPLC. Due to online delivery of the course in Fall semester of 2020 the Part-Time Academic will be responsible for collecting data for students, help in preparing demonstrations and for checking students' assignments during the course.

Fall Semester – September to December 2020

1. Taking and preconditioning of approximately 800 pictures from wholemount rabbit retina, which students will use for cell count and creating an isodensity map with ganglion cell distribution.

2. Preparing buffers and other solutions for immunocytochemistry. Making immunocytochemistry preparations of neuromuscular junction stained against variety of neuronal markers.  Taking around 400 immunocytochemistry images using confocal microscopy.

3. Analysis of previously made microscopic slides with staining of neural connections and taking of series of pictures of best preparations (also about 400).

4. Processing and imaging tissues using electron microscopy of retina and neuromuscular junctions (approximately 300 pictures).

5. Grade students prelab quizzes and 3 lab reports.

6. Provide feedback from evaluation of assignments, and interact with students "one-on-one" during live office hours to help students interpret and apply feedback from assessments.

7. Assist in preparing of video clips for students. 

This position reports to the Chair of the department.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Applicants must have a PhD in Neuroscience or related discipline and recent experience in anatomical dissections, immunocytochemistry, confocal and electron microscopy including tissue preparation and sectioning for EM. Knowledge of Fiji or Reconstruct program is an asset. Ability to meet deadlines is essential due to online delivery of the course.
