Job Posting ‑ Plant, Food, and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture

Duties: Reporting to Professors D. Lynch and D. Burton, the technician will work in the Atlantic Soil Health Lab on a regional project that is creating a database of agricultural soil health. Duties will include field collection of samples and will involve driving to farms within the province of Nova Scotia (potential for trips to New Brunswick or PEI, as well), meeting with farmers, and collecting soil samples from fields following standard procedures to ensure integrity of samples. Duties will also include processing soil samples in the laboratory with a variety of analytical tests, recording and working with data, and laboratory maintenance. This technician will work with a post-doctoral researcher, a research assistant, and graduate students.  

Qualifications:

Ability to work in a team

Demonstrated interest in agriculture or soil science

Must be able to pay attention to, and record details

Ability to learn new skills

Ability to follow standard laboratory and safety protocols exactly

Excellent communication skills

Flexibility in work hours (trips may occasionally extend beyond a standard work day to accommodate travel times)

Completion of at least 2 year of studies in agriculture, biology, or environmental sciences with a minimum average of 75%

Valid driver's license (essential)

Additional assets include (in order of importance):

Laboratory skills or training in soil or plant analysis

Interest or experience with soil microbiology
