The research assistant will be involved in a research project examining a novel controlled breeding protocol for improving sheep flock genetics and increasing lamb production. The assistant will herd, weigh, body condition score, administer drugs, perform ultrasonography, and handle sheep. Blood samples will be collected, processed, and stored by the research assistant. They will also prepare kits for blood collection, ultrasonography, and hormone treatments.
The applicant should have completed some post-secondary education in the field of animal science, pre-veterinary medicine, veterinary medicine, biology, or a related field. Knowledge of reproductive endocrinology will be an asset, as is large animal experience.
Applicants who have extensive experience in post-secondary science courses that encourage good health/safety practices or completed appropriate health/safety courses (i.e., WHMIS, first aid/CPR, biosafety, animal care, occupational health and safety) are preferred. If they are not trained for certain tasks, the applicant must be willing to be trained, as appropriate and necessary.
The applicant should be well organized, have excellent time management skills, and work well in a team environment. Good written and oral communication skills are essential.
Up to 35 hours per week
Minimum of 5 weeks; start date is May 29th
Salary range - $12.06 to $15.76 per hour (includes 4%
vacation); based on education and previous training.
