Job description: The Research Assistant/Intern will work collaboratively with researchers at Dalhousie University and The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) to help (1) conduct semi-­‐ structured interviews and participatory spatial mapping with hunters, fishers, naturalists and other key knowledge holders about wildlife use and movement patterns in the Chignecto Isthmus region of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, (2) deliver two one-­‐day participatory mapping workshops with a subset of these participants in Sackville, NB and/or Amherst, NS, and (3) analyze the transcripts and spatial data. The research will serve to better understand local knowledge and perspectives on wildlife movement pathways and efforts to conserve them in a context of infrastructural and other land use changes and adaptations in response to climate change. 

Specific skills and interests required primarily include those related to:

  • Interpersonal competencies for interacting with local people, regional knowledge holders, policy makers, and conservation practitioners. 

Skills in qualitative social science methods, ArcGIS, Story Maps and/or Web Maps for participatory mapping are considered assets. 

The position would start in April and ideally extend to December 2019. The majority of the work will be concentrated in the summer months, with extended travel in the Chignecto Isthmus region to assist with on-­the-­ground interviews. Part-­time work would ideally extend through the fall term, assisting with workshops and data analysis. The position would work well as a summer internship and fall term graduate project (e.g., for MREM) or undergraduate thesis. Arrangements are negotiable depending upon the circumstances of the successful candidate. 

Although the position targets a currently in­‐program graduate or upper-­level undergraduate student, we will consider applications from recent graduates.

Terms: Funding for the position is provided by SSHRC. Remuneration is:

  • Summer:  780 hours (16 weeks, average 30 hours/week) @ $22.50/hour plus 6% vacation pay 
  • Fall:  120 hours (12 weeks, average 10 hours/week) @ $22.50/hour plus 6% vacation pay
