Part-Time Employment Opportunity: Teaching Assistant History of Science and Technology Programme – HSTC1801

The University of King's College's History of Science and Technology Programme invites applications for a Teaching Assistant position for its Winter 2018 course HSTC 1801 Technology and Engineering: from the Industrial Age to the Cybernetic Age. This course offers a unique historical overview of the development of technology and engineering, with special attention on the ethical and legal issues that have marked the professionalization of engineering in Canada.

Duties include but not limited to:

Attending lecture (2 hrs./week – Mondays/Wednesdays 9:35-10:25 a.m. Dalhousie Sexton Campus)
Attending weekly teaching staff meeting (Mondays, 10:35-11:25 a.m. Dalhousie Sexton Campus)
Preparing and conducting tutorials (1 or 2 hr./wk.; 8-10 times over the semester)
Holding office hours (1 hr./wk. for each tutorial group – Sexton campus- limited times available)
Ensuring an online presence to assist students with assignments.
Proctoring (must be available during the final exam period).
Grading assignments and exams

The TAs for this course must be prepared to consult on a regular basis with the instructor regarding pedagogy, grading, and other work-related expectations.

Qualifications and Experience:

Candidates may come from various fields (this is a widely interdisciplinary program) but should have at least an undergraduate degree. Candidates with a strong interest in the history of technology and/or experience with writing-intensive courses or ESL students are especially encouraged to apply.

Closing Date: Wednesday December 12, 2018 and will continue until positions are filled.

Hourly Rate of Pay: $23.93. Number of hours will be conditional on the course's final enrollment numbers but is likely to be between 110 and 130 hours per tutorial for the semester.

Part-Time Employment Opportunity: Teaching Assistant in the Early Modern Studies Program

The Early Modern Studies Program (EMSP) at the University of King's College invites applications for a Teaching Assistant to handle duties in EMSP 2480.03 (cross-listed as HIST 2750.03), "The Pirate and Piracy". EMSP 2480 is an interdisciplinary course which examines philosophical, historical, and literary treatments of pirates and piracy in the early modern period (roughly 1500 to 1800), with reference to ancient, medieval, and later periods in European and non-European history.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Marking written assignments
Holding office hours
Attending lectures (please consult the Dalhousie Academic Timetable regarding the class time)
Reading course material
Consulting on a regular basis with the instructor regarding the approach taken in teaching, grading, and other expectations

Qualifications and Experience:

Candidates may come from various fields but should have at least an undergraduate degree. A background in some area of early modern studies and/or the history of maritime piracy is required.
