Position Title:               RESEARCH ASSISTANT

Start date:                       April 17th 2018 (1 month probation)

End date:                         July 31st 2018 (neg​otiable)

Location:                         Dalhousie University, Faculty of Management

Remuneration:             $21.50 per hour

Workload:                       10-15 hours per week (negotiable)

​​Description

The AFFORD project (Affordable eFfective eFficient Oncology Reimbursement Decisions) is a partnership with the panCanadian Oncology Drug Review (pCODR). Details about the project are available at www.cancerdrugfunding.ca

A research assistant (RA) will be added to the research team. The primary task for this position will be the coding of narrative text-based decision reports of the pCODR into quantitative indicators.  

Responsibilities

The RA is expected to familiarize themselves with the project and the pCODR websites prior to starting the position. As a part of the position, the RA will have the following responsibilities:

  • Work in close collaboration with other members of the research team;
  • Add to the bank of pCODR decision reports for project purposes;
  • Read each report in detail and identify specific outcome indicators using a specified and existing code. An example is the identification of the recommendation made by pCODR for a particular drug and assigning values of 1 for recommended, 2 for conditionally recommended, and 3 for not recommended.
  • Code independently then discuss with a second coder.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate must have a graduate level University degree (or be in the final stages of completion), and have demonstrated experience with academic research and text-based analysis. Preference will be given to those with a demonstrated health related research focus, but other research backgrounds will also be considered. The RA will have flexibility in terms of task assignment. The RA must be available for work on the Dalhousie campus in Halifax, willing to work to deadlines, with the expectations that at times, this might mean working outside of standard work hours. The ideal candidate will commit to the project and project outcomes. The first month of the position is probationary.
