WORK ASSIGNMENT

To teach one section of CRWR 3021.03 (section 02) Creative Writing: Fiction II in the winter term of the 2018-19 academic year, currently scheduled for Mondays from 17:35-20:25.  Admission is by portfolio submission or the completion of ENGL3099/CRWR 3020 with a grade of B or better. The part-time academic will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class, including lectures and evaluation. The part-time academic should also be available for two hours per week for consultation with students. The position reports to the Chair of the Department.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants should be published creative writers, with at least one book of fiction to their credit. Evidence of teaching effectiveness at the post-secondary level is required for this position. Service as a university writer-in-residence will count as teaching experience.

All applications should include a curriculum vitae, two confidential letters of reference and evidence of teaching effectiveness. For each part-time academic the Chair will conduct an annual assessment of teaching performance, now required under the CUPE Collective Agreement. This assessment will be based on student ratings of instruction and may also include classroom observation, conducted either by the Chair or a representative from the Centre for Learning and Teaching with reasonable advance notice.

WORK ASSIGNMENT

To co-teach one section of ENGL/CRWR 1030.06, Reading and Writing Stories, in the fall term of the 2018-2019 academic year. The proposed teaching schedule is Tuesday/Thursday 14:35-16:25 with tutorials scheduled at various times on Wednesdays.  Teaching assistant support will be provided. This interdisciplinary course in Creative Writing and English has four broad but connected objectives:
 

•           to introduce students to the study of fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction;

•           to introduce students to the creation of fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction;

•           to develop students' literacy skills so that they will be more critical and responsive readers;

•           to help students refine their skills as effective and imaginative writers.

The part-time academic will be responsible for teaching the creative writing elements of the course in consultation with a faculty member from the English Department.  The part-time academic and the English Department faculty member will jointly be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class. Each instructor will be responsible for 3 hours of instruction weekly and the evaluation of student work. The part-time academic should also be available for two hours per week for consultation with students. The part-time academic reports to the Chair of the Department.
