Employment Opportunity: Residence and Teaching Assistant

Advanced Seminar in Baroque Culture, Czech Republic

June 1 to July 2, 2018

HIST 4162/MUSC 4360/THEA 4735, "Advanced Seminar in Baroque Culture," taught on-site in Český Krumlov, Czech Republic, offers a survey of key aspects of 17th and 18th -century European history and society, along with a first-hand view of some of the most important aspects of Baroque style and material culture. Students have a unique opportunity to consider the connections between course material and the evidence of Baroque culture to be found in the Castle Theatre's scenographic machinery, its stock of original scenery and props, and its collection of historical costumes, as well as to witness an experimental Baroque opera performance. The course include visits to Prague and other sites of interest.

The course runs from June 1 to July 2, 2018, including travel dates. During that time, the Residence and Teaching Assistant (RTA) will help the Instructors supervise and provide support for the 22 students enrolled in the course. The duties include providing initial crisis response, offering on-call support to students as needed, and liaising with the accommodations staff to ensure students are following regulations. The RTA will attend all classes/events and assist with class administration as needed. The RTA will be expected to contribute to the student life of the course by maintaining a friendly, respectful and safe environment.

Applicants should have an undergraduate degree of at least one year's standing. They should possess excellent leadership, communication, and listening skills, and be able to work independently. Experience in leadership positions and in providing peer support is highly desirable: applicants with Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (A.S.I.S.T.) and Mental Health First Aid will be given priority. Travel experience and Czech language skills would be assets.

Remuneration is a private room in the Český Krumlov Study Centre (with private bath), return flight and airport transfers to Český Krumlov, Czech Republic, and an honorarium. The return flight can be arranged individually, up to a set maximum, but the RTA must arrive at the airport in Linz, Austria by Friday, June 1 and depart on Monday, July 2, 2018.
