The Department of Bioethics invites applications for a five year limited term position for a health care ethicist at the rank of Assistant Professor, with a starting date of February 1, 2018 or as negotiated. This person will be a member of the Ethics Collaborations Team in the Department, which has formal responsibilities to provide ethics support to the Nova Scotia Health Authority, the IWK Health Centre and the Nova Scotia Health Ethics Network. This person will also, within the terms of this position, contribute to the mission and mandate of the Department of Bioethics.

The Department of Bioethics promotes social justice and advances ethics in and of health care practice. Collaborating with practitioners, educators, learners, policy makers, and health organizations, we develop ethics capacity in multiple spheres of health. Challenging questions and issues emerge in these contexts and, in our scholarship, we explore and enhance understanding of their ethical dimensions.

We are specifically looking for candidates who have a strong interest in
clinical and organizational ethics and desire to situate their practice in an
academic health science setting. Working closely with the Ethics Collaborations Team, the successful candidate will be adaptive and responsive to dynamic ethics support needs, which include clinical and organizational ethics consultation, policy development and review, and ethics education. Ethics support is provided across a range of clinical settings throughout the province, which involves some travel, and creates a natural platform for building ethics capacity, a core commitment of the Ethics Collaborations. This is a context in which creative approaches to knowledge translation for health care providers can be developed and cultivated.

In addition, the successful candidate will have opportunities to participate in the design, development, and delivery of innovative, integrated undergraduate and postgraduate ethics education curricula for medical learners, and contribute to the ethics-related professional development of faculty members and health care providers. The successful candidate will also have some opportunities to pursue research interests in health care ethics.

Applicants must have either: 1) a PhD (completed or near completion) in bioethics or a related discipline, or 2) a Master's degree in bioethics or a related discipline plus an MD or equivalent. This is a full-time position (1.0 FTE). For MDs and other health care professionals who are in practice, applications for a 0.8 – 1.0 FTE will be considered. Applicants must have some experience and/or training in clinical ethics. Experience with organizational ethics, health policy work and ethics education is preferred. Applicants must have strong interpersonal skills. Knowledge of the Canadian health system is also preferred. Some teaching experience is preferred. This position is potentially renewable, dependent on ongoing funding.
