Position Title:  Research Assistant — Royal Bank of Canada Sustainability Leadership Certificate (RBC SLC)

Classification:Grant-Paid Term Position

Term:   Oct. 1, 2017 - July 1, 2018

Salary:  $20 per hour, 12 hours per week on non-module weeks, 34 hours on weeks including  one of the three RBC SLC modules 

Department: College of Sustainability

Reports to:  Sherry Elliott, Manager, Finance & Admin, College of Sustainability

Supervision:  Andrew Bergel, Academic Lead, Royal Bank of Canada Sustainability Leadership                                               Certificate, College of Sustainability

PURPOSE OF POSITION:
           
This grant-paid position provides research support for the Royal Bank of Canada Sustainability Leadership Certificate program, specifically to the Manager, Finance & Admin of the College of Sustainability, and Academic Lead of the Certificate program. This Certificate program is funded by a ten-year grant, now entering its fourth year, given by the Royal Bank of Canada for administration and academic supervision through Dalhousie's College of Sustainability. Research activities will include environment scans, facilitation of the program literature searches, survey design, data collection, analysis of results, and assisting in the preparation of a research article for publication on behalf of the College of Sustainability.

STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBLITIES:

1.   In liaison with College of Sustainability and the current RBC SLC facilitation team, assists with the design, development, administration and analysis of the evaluation of the Royal Bank of Canada Sustainability Leadership Certificate program (RBC SLC), including:

·         gathering pre- and post-program metrics regarding student attitudes toward sustainability,
leadership and community service

·         evaluation of each weekend module, including student and faculty feedback

·         evaluation of the service learning objectives and academic manual for the program

·           evaluation of the portfolio requirement of the RBC SLC

2.    Build a resource library, for Dalhousie’s College of Sustainability, of evidence-based knowledge that will support the development of appropriate research instruments for the above evaluation components

3.    Participates in the communication, management, analysis and coordination of results

4.    Provides research support including literature reviews, environmental scans, identification of institutional data requirements and data collection/analyses, and assistance in the preparation and writing of a research article meant for publication in an academic journal (to be submitted by July 1st, 2018)

     5.    Performs other related duties as required.

EDUCATION:

Minimum of a Bachelors degree in a social or natural science discipline
with three years’ relevant research experience, prior experience with the RBC SLC program will be considered an asset for hiring.

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS

•     record of performing higher-level research tasks including literature reviews using various journal and internet search engines;

•     knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods and analyses required

•     high degree of computer literacy is required including proficiency with computer programs  such as Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel, SPSS.

•     strong interpersonal, communication, facilitation, writing, and organizational skills are required for this       position;

•     ideally, the candidate will have a working knowledge of the university environment;

•     the person holding this position establishes working relationships with a wide variety of internal and external personnel, and works well in a team environment.
