Appointment of Registrar & Assistant Vice‑Provost Student Affairs

Vice-Provost Student Affairs, Arig al Shaibah, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Mike McAllister as Registrar & Assistant Vice-Provost Student Affairs. Dr. McAllister has served as Acting Registrar since May 1, 2016.

Dr. McAllister received a BMath (Computer Science and Combinatorics & Optimization) from the University of Waterloo, and both his MSc and PhD in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia. He has been a faculty member in Dalhousie’s Faculty of Computer Science since 1999. During that time, he has also held the role of Associate Dean, Academic and was honoured with recognition for his devoted service to the Faculty, outstanding student advising, and teaching excellence.

Dr. McAllister has had numerous involvements in the Faculty and in institution-wide student-experience and student-success initiatives, including work to improve Faculty recruitment, scholarship modelling, teaching and learning, academic integrity, academic scheduling and retention. During his time as Acting Registrar, Dr. McAllister has been effectively overseeing the wide range of registrarial services and enrolment supports, including undergraduate recruitment and admissions, academic regulation review and administration, systems development and implementation, stewardship of student data and records, student registration, academic scheduling, academic calendars, transfer credits, financial aid and awards, ceremonial functions enrolment reporting, and enrolment data requests .

This past year, Dr. McAllister has been instrumental in bringing a registrarial and student affairs lens on committees advancing strategic enrolment management, data access and governance, academic programming, teaching and learning, and facilities renewal, to name a few. At the same time, his leadership style has contributed to strengthening workplace culture in the Registrar’s Office and facilitating the Office’s reintegration within the Student Affairs portfolio. He has also developed very collaborative partnerships within Student Affairs and across the institution.

Dr. McAllister brings deep and broad institutional knowledge, strong analytical and operational skills, and an energizing solution-orientated and collaborative approach to this role.
