Information Access and Privacy Workshop (IAP)

Dalhousie University is pleased to offer a one-day workshop on information access and privacy (IAP) featuring well-known public sector IAP consultant Bob Doherty. This workshop is developed and delivered specifically for the needs of Post-Secondary Institutions and will be delivered in a highly interactive manner that builds upon and values the learning of each participant.

Freedom of Information and Privacy Foundations
June 24, 2016 (9AM – 4PM)
The workshop will provide a practical guide for post-secondary educational institutions on the compliance requirements, best practices, current issues and trends under the N.S. Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIPOP) Act. Those attending this session will come away with a basic understanding of the key points of the legislation for universities and community colleges and their relevance to the work not only of IAP administrators, but also management and staff in the major administrative and operational areas (i.e. admin, communications, HR, and IT) institution. A significant part of the workshop will also involve learning from the experiences of experienced FOIPOP Administrators, and problem solving dealing with realistic case study scenarios.

Features of the workshop will include:
• “How to Stay Out of Trouble”: the ten key application processing points;
• “The Exemption Guide”: a reference and practical guide for applying understanding FOIPOP’s most important ( e.g. 3rd party business and personal privacy) as well as university specific exemptions to disclosure of information;
• “Privacy Basics” - five key privacy protection points that will ensure compliance with the law;
• “Simple PIA’s” – an aid to developing a privacy impact assessment for new programs involving personal information;
• “Protecting the Store” - key points ensuring privacy compliance in implementing outsourced information technology projects
• “The Review Process and How It Works”
• “Case Studies” and “Severing Exercises” – case studies dealing with third party business information in contracts, board meetings, and personal information involved in disciplinary hearings and sexual harassment investigation reports.

The workshop cost: $345 or $275 for three or more participants registering from the same institution at the same time. The workshop fee includes materials and lunch.

Who Should Attend? This one day workshop is intended for not only for university IAP administrators, but also senior post-secondary education administrators as well as Information technology, human resources, and information management professionals. It will provide helpful tips and understanding for individual IAP administrators processing FOI applications. However, it will also give other management and professional staff within an institution a greater understanding of the access and privacy compliance requirements and best practices for their institution.

Workshop Leader: Bob Doherty
The workshop will be conducted by Robert (Bob) Doherty who brings a plethora of experience as a public servant, university professor and consultant in the Information Access and Privacy (IAP) field. As Nova Scotia’s first full-time IAP Director, he provided policy advice, training and IAP administration for over a decade. Bob has taught courses in information access and privacy for both Dalhousie and Mount St. Vincent University and worked with the University of Alberta’s IAP Certificate Program. He has worked with universities in the past, and most recently was a privacy advisor in the education sector to the provincial SchoolsPlus Program and the New Brunswick Integrated Service Delivery (ISD) Program. Also, as part of his work, he continues to provide general and sector specific IAP Training workshops across Nova Scotia He holds a M.Sc. in communications from Boston University and an LL.B from Dalhousie University. Bob will bring not only a sound academic perspective but plenty of practical experience to the workshop experience.

The workshop will be held at Dalhousie University in the Mona Campbell Building. After your registration is received a detailed map along with parking instructions will be sent to you.

Cancellations
Cancellations can be made without penalty until June 17th. After November 17th there will be a 50% penalty. Substitutions can be made at any time without penalty. No refunds will be given to registrants who fail to attend.
