Healthy Workplaces: Environmental Wellness

Posted by Human Resources on August 27, 2014 in Human Resources

In anticipation of the call for submissions for the 2014 Healthy Workplace Award at Dalhousie, this post will highlight Environmental Wellness.

This is a broad topic, with far reaching implications, yet we undervalue the impact the physical environment has on employee well-being and productivity; at least we do until there’s a problem with that environment and then we understand the importance very well. Lighting, temperature, odour, noise, furniture choices, safety, the list goes on….. Each plays a part in the equation of the workplace experience of the people involved.

Taking breaks for a “change of scenery” may be all you need. Perhaps you could use some tips on setting up your work station so it suits your body with Dal’s ergonomics self-assessment guide. Don’t forget the healing power of nature. Here are some suggestions for bringing nature into your workplace.

When it comes to broader environmental considerations, Dal’s Office of Sustainability has tips and support available for you and your work group.

Visit the Healthy Dalhousie website (http://healthy.dal.ca) any time for more information on this topic and on the Healthy Workplace Award (deadline: September 30, 2014).
