Psychology and Neuroscience Department, Dalhousie University

Part-time Instructor: Advertisement

The Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Dalhousie University invites applications for a 10-month 60% Limited-Term Instructor position commencing August 1, 2014. Assigned responsibilities include teaching three sections of a third-year Neuroscience lab class (NESC3371) and a third-year lecture class in Molecular Neuroscience (NESC3970).

The Instructor will be responsible for all lectures, for supervising lab sessions, for test preparation, and for exam administration (including supplemental examinations) and be available for two hours per week for student consultation.

Student project supervision and participation in departmental administration will be also expected.

The laboratory class will require experience in some or all of the following methods: confocal microscopy, immunocytochemistry, high-performance liquid chromatography, visualization of neurotransmitter systems, and electron microscopy of neurons and synapses. The class will mostly use preparations from vertebrate retinas and insect brains.

Applicants should have a PhD in Neuro- or Biological Sciences, demonstrated teaching effectiveness, and previous experience teaching this material.

INSTRUCTOR

DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE

The Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Dalhousie University invites applications for an Instructor position. This is a three-year, limited-term position and is available starting July 1, 2014. Job candidates should have a PhD in Psychology and have teaching experience at the undergraduate level, particularly in the coordination and development of psychology lab demonstrations and report writing. Experience with first year students and familiarity with team-teaching are highly recommended, as is knowledge of Web-based course management.

The instructor, under the general direction of the department’s Undergraduate Program Coordinator, will be responsible for organization and administration of the team-taught courses, Psychology 1011 and Psychology 1012. These fall and winter courses have enrollments of approximately one thousand students. The instructor will also develop and oversee the lab component of the course in conjunction with teaching PSYO/NESC 3010. Students in the latter class teach the lab component of PSYO1011/1012. Specific responsibilities include responding to e-mail messages, student advising, creating and updating the blended learning component of PSYO1011/1012 websites on OWL (Blearn), coordinating make up tests and evaluations and recruiting appropriate students for PSYO/NESC 3010. The instructor will also teach two other half credit courses (6 credit hours), preferably in the spring or summer offerings of Introductory Psychology and Neuroscience.

The instructor is expected to maintain a professional interest in issues related to the teaching and technical aspects associated with delivering an introductory psychology course. Because of heavy course-related demands during the fall and winter terms, time for these activities will be available during the summer months.

The instructor is also expected to participate in administrative work in the Department, and will serve on appropriate Departmental, Faculty and University Committees. Psychology and Neuroscience Department, Dalhousie University

Fulltime Instructor

The Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Dalhousie University invites applications for a 12-month Instructor position commencing 1 July 2014. Assigned duties are equivalent to a nine half-credit course load distributed over a one-year period.

The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be to organize and coordinate the laboratory sections associated with two half-credit methodology classes. Additional teaching includes two undergraduate level courses, and the organization of the third year independent project courses.

Duties entail organizing meetings of instructors and TAs, maintaining course material, student records, and “Turnitin” functions on the Blackboard Learning System (BLS), selecting and supervising undergraduate TAs assisting with methods classes, and performing programming and statistical analyses for lab projects.

Additional responsibilities entail coordinating access for students in a variety of lab classes to a resident computer lab when required and assisting in implementing scheduled computer upgrades, program acquisition and renewal of site licenses for this lab. This includes maintaining the inventory of laboratory equipment, seeing to repairs, allocating equipment and undergraduate laboratory space for research projects in other classes.

Applicants should have an advanced degree in Psychology and some experience teaching in a university setting. Good computer skills are necessary. Experience with Macintosh operating system is required; and the candidate is expected to be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as data entry and file maintenance.
