Posted Sunday to The Chronicle Herald's website:

As sure as springtime, the end of classes for Halifax university and college students means the annual shedding of stuff before they make their way home for summer break.

Some of this stuff takes the shape of huge piles by the curb.

Thanks to a few student organizers, some of it took the shape of huge piles in a Dalhousie gym Sunday, where instead of being tossed into a landfill, it was sold to raise money for local charities.

It wasn’t only charities who walked away happy from the Halifax Dump and Run. Jayme Stevens furnished his new apartment with that je-ne-sais-quoi only student castoffs can provide.

“Griddles, lamps, clothes hamper, towels,” he recited as he looked through the loot piled in his arms, plus the loads carried by two helpers he had brought with him.

“A corkscrew with a happy face on it — everybody has to have that!” he smiled. “Ah, yes. An electric fish tank.”

Stevens’ small mountain cost $24 in total.

Now that the Dump and Run is in its 11th year, word is out about the prices.
