Two well‑working wheels will travel at the Campus Bike Centre

Posted by Communications and Marketing on August 28, 2012 in Community Highlights

It’s a place to learn about your bicycle, or to tweak or fix an issue that’s keeping you grounded on two feet instead of riding smooth on two wheels. And its services are made possible by Dal volunteers.

The Campus Bike Centre, located next to the Studley Gymnasium, offers a safe space for Dalhousie community members to gain valuable education in cycling, whether it’s about riding, maintenance or upkeep.

While it’s not a full-service repair shop, volunteers are on-hand during operating hours to assist and offer guidance on keeping your bicycle in tip-top shape. And there are plenty of tools there for you to make use of.

“If you bike to work or school and have a problem [with your bike], it’s easy to fix it before you go home, or over your lunch hour,” says Jerome Fournier, a web analyst with Dalhousie’s web team who volunteers once a week at the centre.

“Not everyone has the tools or the knowhow to fix their bikes, but because we’re right here on campus, we can help sort things out as best we can,” says John Bullock, information security manager for Dal and also a Bike Centre volunteer. "Many people are inheriting 'retro rides.' That's great but older bikes often need a bit of TLC."

The Bike Centre also offers bike repair clinics and other evening education classes, as well as bike loans on a short-term basis.
