Dalhousie has ranked among the top 400 universities globally and among the top 17 universities in Canada in the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy's 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

ARWU uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers, number of articles published in the influential journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in key citation databases, and per capita performance of university academics.

Among the Dalhousie researchers who contributed to papers published in Nature this year was Earth and Environmental Sciences professor John Gosse, who helped date the sediments as part of the exciting discovery of a 2-million-year-old ecosystem in Greenland.

Dalhousie is tied with Laval University, Simon Fraser University, University of Saskatchewan, University of Victoria, and Western University in the ranking group of 301-400 globally and 12-17 nationally.

ShanghaiRanking is expected to release the Global Rankings of Academic Subjects in late October.
