Current and former members of the men's volleyball team celebrate at the 2022 Canada Games closing ceremony.

The 2022 Canada Games wrapped up on August 21 in Niagara, Ontario and the Tigers were well represented with over 55 current, incoming and former athletes and coaches participating in the Games.

In the first week of competition, incoming women’s basketball player Sarah Valley helped lead Team Saskatchewan to a silver medal finish. Jasenda Horsman and Mercy Ogulu earned a sixth-place finish representing Nova Scotia, while Gracie Dalton and Abby Carpenter finished the event in ninth with Newfoundland.

Freshman Danny Daly also came home with a medal around his neck, helping to lead Nova Scotia to a third-place finish.

“It was a really great experience representing Nova Scotia and getting to know players from other provinces,” says Daly. “Winning the bronze was amazing, especially when no one thought we could! We only missed getting into the gold medal game by one basket. We went up against bigger players from across Canada and showed them we have the will to win.”

Tigers women’s volleyball player Brett Boldon and her partner earned a fourth-place finish in beach volleyball for Team New Brunswick. On the men’s side, Josh DeYoung and his partner also finished fourth for Team Nova Scotia. Justin Cross placed sixth with his partner for Manitoba, while Ethan Boyd’s team placed seventh for Team PEI.

On the soccer pitch, incoming Tiger Jared Ndopedero helped New Brunswick to a fourth-place finish.

'My goal felt surreal'

There were even more Tigers in action during week two, highlighted by first-year women’s soccer player Olivia Jack scoring the game-winning goal in the bronze medal soccer game.

“I was in shock when the ball went into the net,” says Jack. “The game was so tight and such a battle that my goal felt surreal. Coming home with the bronze medal is truly amazing. I am very proud of what this team has accomplished. We have worked very hard over the last three years in the hopes of bringing home a medal. I will forever remember this Canada Games and look forward to using the experience I have gained heading into my first season with the Tigers.”

Current men’s volleyball coach Dan Ota led Nova Scotia’s women’s volleyball team to a seventh-place finish with first year player Paris Stewart and 2021-22 players Ali Nadalini and Bella Noble on the team.

In the men’s competition, incoming player Owen Tran helped Team New Brunswick to a seventh-place finish while Derrick Ejeckam, Pat Beresford and Tyler Wisemen led Team Newfoundland to an eighth-place finish.

Former Tiger Arcel Socian was named the week two winner of the Pat Lechelt True Sport Award. This is the first games that this award has been handed out and is in memory of Team Alberta's Pat Lechelt. The award is given each week to an athlete who best exemplifies the True Sport principals on an off the field.

Women’s hockey player Abby Wamboldt finished 15th in the individual women’s golf event and was fifth in the mixed team event for Nova Scotia.

On the track and field

The Tigers track and field athletes also had a great showing representing three provinces at the Games this year. Will Cox, Dan Lord and Chelsea MacIsaac (Team Nova Scotia) led the way with fifth-place finishes in the steeplechase, 400m and discus events, respectively.

Sophie Inkpen led a trio of Dalhousie rowers at the Canada Games, earning a bronze medal in the doubles event.

Swim head coach Lance Cansdale led Nova Scotia’s teams to a seventh-place finish.
