Dal's Studley Quad swirled with colour Sunday morning as students turned out to celebrate Holi, a popular Hindu festival that marks the arrival of spring.

The event, hosted by the International Centre and the Dalhousie International Students' Association, began with food and music in the atrium at LeMarchant Place before students made their way onto the campus quad to throw coloured powder at each other — one of the defining aspects of the celebration.

Warm temperatures meant students were able to shed some heavier outerwear and embrace the fun of spreading the colours, which were food-based and non-toxic. The colours are meant to symbolize equality.

On the Indian subcontinet, where the holiday originated, and in other countries where it is celebrated, the festival often begins with a bonfire. In addition to marking winter's end, it is also meant as a celebration of good triumphing over evil.
