G2 Athletes of the Week (Week Ending September 18)

(Halifax, N.S.) - Dalhousie University presents our G2 Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, September 18, 2016.

Maya Venkataraman, Soccer

First-year midfielder Maya Venkataraman is this week’s G2 Female Athlete of the Week.

Venkataraman was a sparkplug in the Tigers midfield all weekend, giving them consistent work rate and creativity. She was named the Tigers player of the game on Saturday and helped the Tigers to a 1-1 tie on Sunday.

A medical science student, Maya is from Summerland, B.C.

Freddy Bekkers, Soccer

Second-year midfielder Freddy Bekkers is this week’s G2 Male Athlete of the Week.

Bekkers led the Tigers to a win and a tie, scoring three goals this past weekend.

In Saturday’s 3-1 over the CIS #8 ranked Cape Breton Capers, he scored his first goal of the game to tie it up at one apiece heading into the half. Bekkers got his second of the game early in the second half to put the Tigers up 2-1.

Just four minutes into Sunday’s match with the StFX X-Men, Bekkers notched his third goal of the weekend to put the Tigers up 1-0. The match would end in a 1-1, vaulting the Tigers into second place in the AUS.

Bekkers leads the Tigers in goals scored with four so far this season and is currently second in the AUS scoring race.

A native of Halifax, N.S., Freddy is an engineering student.
