Tracy Rands joined Dalhousie as director of talent management in January.

Talent Management is a new portfolio within Human Resources that focuses on recruitment, performance management, career and leadership development, and organizational health. The former Employee and Organizational Development (EOD) and Recruitment and Retention teams have joined together to become the new Talent Management unit and are focused on supporting the university’s strategic priority to attract, develop, support and reward the best faculty and staff.

Tracy brings nearly 20 years of HR experience from a range of industry in both the private and public sectors. She has worked in a variety of HR roles with organizations such as the CGI Group, RBC, the NSLC, the Public Service Commission of Nova Scotia, and most recently as HR Manager for NATIONAL Public Relations.

In addition to her corporate experience, Tracy has been a part-time lecturer with Dalhousie’s Faculty of Management and an instructor for the Advanced Diploma in Human Resources Management with the Nova Scotia Community College.

As an active mentor and career coach, Tracy has been involved with the FUSION mentorship program and Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia (ISANS), facilitated job search workshops for not-for-profit organizations such as Team Works/The Workbridge, and regularly provides pro bono career counseling to individuals and groups. She has also volunteered her time to support the IWK Telethon, Big Brothers & Big Sisters, and the United Way.

Tracy took some time out of her day to answer some of our questions.

Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised here in Halifax, but spent nine years in Toronto.

Where did you go to university?
I attended Saint Mary’s University for my Bachelor of Arts and I am a proud Dalhousie alum as well, MBA class of 1996.

Why did you choose to come to Dal?
Coming to Dal has been like coming home. I loved going to school here. I loved teaching here. I am delighted to be able to bring together my passion for HR and academics in a place that is near and dear to my heart.

What’s the one thing you want to improve in Human Resources/the faculty and staff experience?
This is a tough question. There are so many things I am excited to work on. One area I am particularly passionate about is career development. Nurturing and supporting the growth and development of faculty and staff will be key to boosting engagement, strengthening our succession pipeline and retaining top talent.

What do you enjoy most about Dal so far?
My amazing colleagues who have been so helpful and welcoming — oh, and being able to walk to work. That is awesome.

What did you want to be when you grow up?

A Broadway musical star, of course.

What do you do in your spare time?

Play the piano, sing karaoke (badly), take dance classes, spend time with my kids and dog.

What do you never leave home without?
Something pink.

Favourite food?
All food, but Thai is my favourite.

Favourite movie?
Anything directed by Clint Eastwood.

Favourite TV show?
Game of Thrones.
