Women’s Basketball
The Tigers continued to struggle last week without their leader, Tessa Stammberger who has been sidelined for the year due to injury. On Wednesday night, the Tigers fell 72-49 to the Saint Mary’s Huskies and narrowly lost to the UPEI Panthers on Saturday night 68-67.
Dalhousie managed to hang with the nationally ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies in the first half only trailing by single digits after two quarters. Rachelle Coward and company turned the jets on in the second half outscoring the Tigers by 15 points.
Diedre Alexander and Megan Thompson provided the offence for the Tigers with 16 and 14 points, respectively.
Saturday night’s matchup between the Panthers and Tigers turned out to be a thriller but, Dalhousie came up just short. After a sluggish first half, the Tigers found their stroke in the third quarter outscoring the Panthers 22-13.
With just 6.7 seconds remaining, the Tigers had possession and a shot to win the game but could not convert on the opportunity.
Ainsley MacIntyre was the Tigers highest scoring player with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Despite four straight losses, the Tigers still hold the final playoff spot in the AUS. The Tigers have the ability to control their only destiny with just one game remaining in the season. A win over Cape Breton on Friday, February 26 would solidify a playoff berth.
Men’s Basketball
After a four-point win and loss over the weekend, the Tigers still control sole possession of first place in the AUS. Dalhousie fell 65-55 to the Saint Mary’s Huskies on Wednesday but picked up a big win four points against the Panthers on Saturday with a 94-81.
Wednesday’s contest was lost in the second quarter as the Tigers streaky shooting continued. Dalhousie was outscored 20-6 in the frame and was forced to play come from behind basketball for the rest of the way.
Kashrell Lawrence was the only play to reach double-digits in scoring with 18 points.
The Dalhousie shooters came alive on Saturday, putting on a clinic from three-point range. UPEI established an early lead in the second quarter but once Alex Petronis and Matt McVeigh heated up, UPEI had no chance.
The duo went 9-14 from three, while Cedric Sango did his fair share of sharpshooting going 3-5 from deep.
Dalhousie, now 13-6 can clinch first place in the AUS with a win at Cape Breton on Friday, February 26.
Women’s Hockey
The Tigers have been eliminated from the AUS playoffs with two straight losses to the St. Thomas Tommies in a best of three series. On Wednesday the Tigers were downed 6-2 and fell 3-1 on Friday night.
Dalhousie had the start every coach looks for; an early goal. Jesse Rietveld found the back of the net just 33 seconds into Wednesday night’s meeting. Taylor Reichheld extended the Tigers lead to two later in the first with a tally of her own.
St. Thomas went on to score six-straight goals taking the first game of the series 6-2.
Friday night’s match up was a much closer affair. Trailing by one goal early in the third period Kenzie MacPhee tied the game at 1-1.
Kelty Apperson scored with less then five minutes remaining in the game giving the Tommies a 2-1 lead. Teah Anderson added an empty netter ending the Tigers season.
The young Tigers squad will look to build on their playoff experience next season.
Men’s Volleyball
On Friday night the men’s volleyball team kicked off the AUS Championship series at the Dalplex. The Tigers fell 3-0 (21-25, 15-25, 23-25) to the UNB Varsity Reds in the first game of the best of three series.
The UNB offensive duo of Eivind Anderson and Pascal McCarthy gave the Tigers some trouble with 16 and 14 kills, respectively.
Dalhousie found themselves playing from behind for the majority of the game.
Kristen O'Brien led the offensive attack for Dalhousie with 13 kills while it was Adam Sandeson on the defensive end with a team-high seven digs.
The Tigers will look to even the series on the road Saturday, February 27 at UNB.
Women’s Volleyball
The Tigers finished their regular season on a high note with two wins over the weekend.
They hosted Memorial Friday night, taking down the Sea-Hawks 3-1. Mieke DuMont had 16 kills and 14 digs in the match.
On Sunday, they swept the Acadia Axewomen in Wolfville, cruising to the 3-0 win (25-13, 25-23, 26-24).
Anna Dunn-Suen led the offense with a team high 9 kills. Amy Appleby was the focal point of the Tigers defense with 14 digs.
Dalhousie’s 15-3 record secures them a first round bye in the AUS championship host by Acadia University. Their first game of the tournament comes on Saturday, February 27.
