Men’s Hockey
The men’s hockey team wrapped up their 2015-2016 season on a high note with a 3-2 OT win over the StFX X-Men. Early in the week the Tigers had one of their roughest outings of the year with a 9-3 loss to the Saint Mary’s Huskies.
There wasn’t much on the line for Dalhousie on Wednesday as they had already been mathematically eliminated from the AUS playoffs. The Huskies came out firing putting up four unanswered goals in the opening frame.
Tanner Williams and Andrew Rieder managed to get on the board for the Tigers in the second period but they still trailed 6-2 after two periods of play. Fabian Walsh added the Tigers third goal in the third period but Saint Mary’s added another three goals of their own.
The Tigers managed to bounce back Saturday night against the X-Men coming out in the first period with two goals. Phil Gadoury had a hat trick in the 3-2 win over the X-Men.
With the regular season over Gadoury has won the AUS scoring title with 17 goals.
Women’s Hockey
It was the final week of regular season AUS women’s hockey play with the Tigers in action twice. On Thursday the Tigers came out on top with a 3-1 win over the X-Women and fell to Moncton 5-1 on Sunday evening.
On Thursday night, the Tigers scored three unanswered goals to start the game and headed into the third period with a commanding 3-0 lead. Kara Power spoiled Jessica Severeyns shutout bid late in the third period.
Sunday was a night to forget for the Tigers as they gave up five straight goals to UdeM eventually falling 5-1. Elizabeth MacArthur scored the lone Tigers goal late in the third period on the power play.
The Tigers will face the St. Thomas in their first round best two of three playoff match up. They head to Fredericton on Wednesday and host the Tommies Friday night at 7:30pm.
Women’s Basketball
In their only match up of the week, the Dalhousie Tigers fell 74-59 to the Cape Breton Capers. The Tigers were without their leading scorer Tessa Stammberger who suffered a season-ending injury last week.
Ainsley MacIntyre picked up the slack scoring a season-high 20 points
It was a close back and forth affair until the Tigers fell behind in the fourth quarter. Heading into the final frame the Tigers trailed 50-48 but the offence dried up as they did not make a basket for the first four minutes of the quarter.
The Tigers will travel down South Street to take on the Saint Mary’s Huskies on Wednesday night.
Men’s Basketball
Tigers fans were in for a treat on Friday night when the men’s basketball team took on the Cape Breton Capers at the Dalplex. This one needed extra time to reach a decision as the Tigers edged out the Capers 76-74 in OT.
It was a slow first quarter that lacked offence but the Tigers came out up 12-10.
It was a back and forth affair right down to the final second in second half of the game.
With 27 seconds left in the fourth, the Tigers had possession and trailed 72-71. Ritchie Kanza Mata was sent to the line and hit one of two free throws tying things up at 72-72. Neither team could make a bucket in the dying seconds sending this one to overtime.
Both teams struggled in the overtime frame as the Tigers edged out the Capers 4-2 to take the all-important four point win.
The Tigers will be back in action on Wednesday when they play the Saint Mary’s Huskies.
Women’s Volleyball
The Tigers were in action twice over the weekend coming away with two wins. On Friday night the Tigers took down the UNB Varsity Reds 3-1 (25-21, 16-25, 25-19, 25-20) and on Saturday they beat Moncton 3-1 (26-24, 20-25, 25-19, 25-22).
The trio of Mieke DuMont, Anna Dunn-Suen, and Courtney Baker led the attack all recording 10 kills on Friday night. Outside of a quick lapse in the second set the Tigers were dominant throughout the night.
Marisa Mota led the defence with 15 digs.
It was a similar story line on Saturday afternoon as the Tigers cruised to a 3-1 victory over Moncton dropping the second set along the way. This time it was all Dunn-Suen who had a monster 17 kills.
Mota was dominant as well with 28 digs.
The Tigers next action comes on Friday, February 19 when they host the Memorial Sea-Hawks.
Men’s Volleyball
The men’s volleyball team had a doubleheader against the UNB Varsity Reds over the weekend. The Tigers won just one set over the course of the weekend, falling 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-22) on Friday and 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-23) on Saturday.
Dalhousie competed in every set but struggled to close out the Varsity Reds.
Kristen O’Brien and Matthew Donovan led the attack with 14 and 13 kills respectively on Friday night. The pair struggled to find their rhythm on Saturday night as O’Brien had a team high nine kills and Donovan recorded four of his own.
The Tigers will look forward to the AUS championship in a rematch against the UNB Varsity Reds. The first match of the best two of three series takes place at 8pm on Friday, February 19 at the Dalplex.
Swimming
The AUS championships took place this past weekend at the Dalplex with both the women’s and men’s swimming teams coming away with banners. It was the 18th consecutive men’s championship and the 15th consecutive women’s championship.
Lise Cinq-Mars was named the AUS female rookie of the meet after claiming gold in the 50m butterfly, and silver in the 200m butterfly, 100m and 200m freestyle events this weekend. Morrgan Payne was named the AUS male rookie of the meet after sweeping all three backstroke events.
Phoebe Lenderyou was named the AUS female swimmer of the meet after claiming gold in the 100m butterfly, 100m and 200m backstroke, and the 200m IM events this weekend. She also set three AUS records in individual events over the weekend. The AUS male swimmer of the meet went to Gavin Dyke after sweeping all three freestyle events and the 100m butterfly. He set two new AUS records over the weekend.

The Track & Field team competed at the Saint Mary’s Open at the Canada Games Centre over the weekend. The following athletes placed first in their respective events:

Chantelle Robbertse won the pentathlon at the Windsor Team Challenge and Celia Peters ran a 1:31.91 in the 600m in Ohio on Friday which now ranks her 4th in the CIS.
