Men’s Hockey
It was a busy weekend for the men’s hockey team as they were tasked with three games in just four day. The Tigers went 1-2 during the span and remain in seventh place in the AUS standings.
On Wednesday, the Tigers faced off against cross-town rivals, the Saint Mary’s Huskies at the Halifax Forum. The Huskies were able to hold off a late Tigers comeback and take the game 5-3.
The Tigers found themselves down 3-0 early in the second period but managed to get two quick goals from Phil Gadoury and Fabian Walsh to bring the game within reach
Saint Mary’s crushed the Tigers comeback hopes scoring a late goal in the second period to increase the lead back to two. Both teams would trade goals in the third period for a final score of 5-3.
Friday night the Tigers were on road taking on the University of Moncton Aigles Bleus. The team struggled to get pucks past Brandon Thibeau who made 41 saves in the outing. Moncton had an offensive explosion downing the Tigers 6-1.
Jackson Playfair had the lone Dalhousie goal on the power play in the second period.
After two tough loses the Tigers managed to grind out a shootout win on Saturday night against the St. Thomas Tommies.
The game went completely scoreless as the Tigers took a 1-0 shootout victory after Felix Page found the back of the net. Corbin Boes recorded a shutout stopping 31 shots.
After the 1-2 weekend the Tigers are now 3-6-2 and sit in seventh place in the AUS with eight points. Their next action comes on Friday, November 20th when they host UPEI at the Halifax Forum.
Women’s Hockey
The women’s hockey team have now won their third consecutive game in a row. On Sunday, November 15, the Tigers played the Mount Allison Mounties at the Halifax Forum and the Tigers came away with a 4-2 win after trailing the Mounties 2-0 to start.
The Mounties started the first period with a 1-0 lead which turned into a 2-0 lead early in the second period.
Only minutes later, the Tigers turned the tables and tied up the score 2-2 by scoring two goals courtesy of Tara Morning and Becca Chilvers within a minute of each other.
As the period was coming to a close, Courtney Sheedy scored another goal for the Tigers, which brought them into the lead.
With one minute left in the game, Sarah Robichaud scored the last goal on an empty net, securing the win for Dalhousie.
The Tigers (4-4) will hit the ice again on Sunday, November 22nd when they host Moncton (5-4) at the Forum arena.
Women’s Basketball
After being projected to finish dead last in the AUS in the pre-season coaches’ polls the women’s basketball team is 3-1 and looking like a playoff contender. The Tigers hosted the Memorial Sea-Hawks over the weekend and swept the two game series.
On Friday night, the Tigers took the first game of the weekend 65-57. The ladies barely escaped disaster as they held a 19-point lead at one point but an 18-2 run by the Sea-Hawks in the second half almost cost the Tigers the game.
Coach Stammberger utilized the whole bench as 11 players recorded a bucket.
Tessa Stammberger and Sophie Gaube led the team with 22 and 17 points respectively.
Saturday, the Tigers showed some grit battling back from a third quarter where they were outscored 29-12,putting the Sea-Hawks up 50-43 heading into the fourth.
Dalhousie put up 21 points in the fourth en route to sweeping the series with a 64-62 win.
It was a thrilling finish at the Dalplex as Dierdre Alexander scored the game winning layup with one second left on the clock.
Ainsley MacIntrye and Tessa Stammberger led the attack with 13 points each.
Dalhousie now sits in third place in the AUS with a 3-1 record. Their next action comes on Wednesday, November 18 when they will be tested against the league’s best in the Saint Mary’s Huskies on the road.
Men’s Basketball
The men’s basketball team continues to roll going 2-0 against the Memorial Sea-Hawks at home over the weekend. The Tigers cruised to two double-digit wins over a quality opponent in the Sea-Hawks.
On Friday, night the Tigers jumped out to a 10-point lead and never looked back winning 73-60. Every time the Sea-Hawks looked like they could crawl back into the game, the Tigers would hit big shots to re-establish the lead.
Ritchie Kanza Mata looked solid in his return from injury and was able to get Kashrell Lawrence going offensively. Lawrence had a monster game with 18 points and 15 boards.
It was the same narrative on Saturday afternoon as the Tigers built a first quarter lead and hung on to it to win 72-62. The Tigers never trailed after the opening minutes of the game.
The Tigers displayed how many weapons they have offensively with four players all putting up double-digit points. Jarred Reid put up a team high 14 points and added four assists and four rebounds.
On Wednesday, November 18, the Tigers will head to Saint Mary’s and look to stay undefeated.
Cross Country
Matt McNeil ended his incredible 2015 CIS cross country season with a seventh place finish at the CIS championship host by the University of Guelph. McNeil was named a CIS first team all-Canadian for his efforts.
On the women’s side, Colleen Wilson was the fastest Tiger finishing 12th and was selected as a CIS second team all-Canadian.
The men’s team placed 16th and women’s team finished 5th.

Men’s Volleyball
The men’s volleyball team was able to come away with two wins this weekend on the road against the Memorial Sea-Hawks.
On Saturday, the Tigers handled the Sea-Hawks easily winning 3-0 (25-19, 25-11, 25-22). Scott Bailey led the attack with 12 kills while Kristen O’Brien chipped in nine kills of his own.
Defensively, Jonathan Macdonald was the go-to-guy with nine digs.
The Sea-Hawks managed to give the Tigers some resistance in Sunday’s game but Dalhousie still managed to come away with a 3-1 (25-15, 24-26, 25-16, 27-25) victory.
This time it was O’Brien and Connor Maessen leading the offensive with 17 and 11 kills respectively.
Scott Bailey had a team high 12 digs.
Next weekend the Tigers will travel to Sherbrooke for the second AUS-RSEQ Interlock of the year.
Women’s Volleyball
The women’s volleyball team won a five-set thriller on Sunday afternoon at Dalplex against the Acadia Axewomen. After trailing 2-1, the Tigers rallied back to win 3-2 (25-20, 22-25, 19-25, 25-11, 15-10).
It was Mieke DuMont who carried the offence with 19 kills and nine digs.
Marisa Mota continued to be a defensive machine with 25 digs in the contest.
The Tigers hosts the second AUS-RSEQ Interlock along side the Saint Mary’s Huskies this weekend.
