Cross Country
The defending AUS women’s cross country champion Tigers came out on fire Saturday morning at Point Pleasant Park, winning the team event with 18 points and placing six runners in the top 10. StFX took second with 52 points and Moncton rounded out the top three with 107 points.
Fourth-year Dalhousie runner Colleen Wilson took first place in the 5km race with a time of 18:31. Michelle Reddy, Emily Ferguson, Kayte Kowal, Jenna MacDonald, and Emily Clarke also placed in the top 10 for the Tigers.
Matt McNeil had a great performance for the men, taking the first 6km event of the year with a time of 19:22. StFX’s Alex Neuffer and Point Grey’s John Corbit placed second and third respectively. Will Russell finished in sixth while Brendan Gemmell snuck in at the 10th spot for the Tigers.
The StFX X-Men recorded their first team win of the season continuing their AUS domination with 22 points. Dalhousie placed second with 37 points and Memorial finished third with 122 points.
The next AUS cross country meet takes place September 26th in Antigonish at the StFX Invitational.
Women’s Soccer
The women’s soccer team did not get the start to the season they were looking for this past weekend, dropping their first two games to Mount Allison and Acadia at Wickwire Field. Both contests ended in similar fashion as the Tigers would jump out to an early lead but fail to hold on.
On Saturday afternoon, the ladies hosted the Mount Allison Mounties in their season opener. Dalhousie rookie striker, Shea Jefferey-Novak got things going, scoring her first goal wearing the black and gold in the 28th, minute giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Third-year science student, Dori Homerski kept things trending in the right direction for Dal, sliding a shot past Mounties keeper, Tessa Ritchie, putting the Tigers up 2-0.
The Tigers had an impressive first half outshooting their opponent 8-1, but a late tally by Amanda Volcko seemed to take the life out of the home side heading into the dressing room.
The Mounties came out strong in the second half as Volcko scored two more in the 57th and 60th minutes for a hat trick and the 3-2 victory.
In Sunday’s game, Jefferey-Novak came out firing early, just like Saturday against the Acadia Axewomen, scoring her second of the year halfway through the first. The Axewomen’s potent offence would counter quickly when Kinsella Noseworthy-Smith rushed into the box and rifled a shot past Dalhousie keeper, Tilda Hadley. The teams were tied at 1-1 after the first half.
The Tigers could not handle the Axewomen pressure in the second half conceding five goals in the frame.
The team looked strong at times but could not seem to string together a complete 90 minutes.
Dalhousie's (0-2-0) next action will come on Saturday afternoon as they travel to play the UNB Varsity Reds (0-0-2).
Men’s Soccer
Led by fifth-year arts student Bezick Evraire, the Tigers started the season on the right note, dismantling the Mount Allison Mounties 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at Wickwire Field. They would end up falling to the Acadia Axemen 3-0 on Sunday after allowing three goals in three minutes.
The Tigers were in top form on Saturday, applying constant pressure throughout the match. Zach Mbolekwa took a cross from Evraire in the 20th minute to open up the scoring. The teamed seemed to rally behind the goal and the loud Tigers fans. Will Wright added another before the end of the half on a cross that took a couple bounces before reaching Wright. The Tigers headed into the half looking confident and holding a 2-0 lead.
The second half was the ‘Bezick Evraire Show’ who had a foot in all five of the team’s goals in the final frame. He recorded two of his own including one that could be the nicest we see all season, giving the Tigers a 7-0 victory
On Sunday, the Tigers offence could not solve Acadia Keeper, Nigel Goodwin, who shut the Tigers out in the 3-0 loss. It was a hard-fought match with strong play from both keepers that seemed likely to end in a draw until Andrew Snyder opened the floodgates for Acadia in the 66th minute. After the Snyder tally, the Axemen went on to score two more goals in three minutes, leaving all of Wickwire Field in shock.
The 3-0 defeat certainly did not feel like one as a quick lapse in judgment cost the Tigers the game.
Next Saturday the Tigers (1-1-0) will be on the road against the UNB Varsity Reds (0-2-0).
