Two road games in New Brunswick for the Tigers, two 4-2 losses.
It was a tough weekend on the road for the Tigers as they dropped a pair of games against the University of Moncton and the University of New Brunswick. The losses extend their winless streak to six games.
On Friday against Moncton, Mike Evelyn and Alex Zafiris opened the scoring for the Tigers as they went into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead. The second period would prove to be their undoing as they allowed 22 shots in a penalty-filled frame and Moncton scored three goals to give themselves a 3-2 lead going into the third. Despite the fact that the Tigers outshot the Aigles Bleus in the third period, neither team could find the back of the net until Moncton potted an empty-netter in the final seconds to win 4-2.
They were in tough the next day as they tried to rebound against the CIS No. 3 ranked UNB Varsity Reds. They got down early as UNB piled a 3-0 lead on them midway through the second period as the Tigers managed just four shots on net in the opening frame. Andrew Rieder opened the scoring for the Tigers with a power play goal with just two minutes left in the second, and Dan Joyce followed it up just a minute later to make it a one-goal game heading into the third period.
The Varsity Reds would strike again, as they scored with just over three minutes left in the third to seemingly take the game out of the Tigers reach as they fell 4-2.
Now out of playoff contention, the Tigers will look to end their season on a positive note this week when they take on the Saint Mary's Huskies on Wednesday and Acadia Axemen on Friday. Both games get underway at 7:00pm.
Women's Hockey
The Tigers couldn't make the most of a near-perfect 32 save performance from Jessica Severeyns as they fell 2-1 in a shootout to the UPEI Panthers. The Panthers struck first in the second period, but Marita Alfieri scored her sixth goal of the season to tie the game midway through the third period. Neither team could find the back of the net before regulation ended, so they headed into overtime.
Overtime solved nothing, so the two teams went to a shootout. After the Panthers scored on their first attempt, the Tigers couldn't solve Maie-Soleil Deschenes going scoreless in the shootout as the Panthers took the game 2-1.
The Tigers will be back on the ice when they host the Saint Mary's Huskies on Friday at 7:00pm.
