Women’s Soccer
The Tigers hosted the 2014 Subway AUS Championship this weekend and entered the tournament as the fifth seed. They faced the fourth-seeded Acadia Axewomen in the quarter-final on Friday afternoon.
Kristy McGregor-Bales nearly opened the scoring in the 36th minute with an absolute screamer of a free kick that rattled off the crossbar, but the teams played to a scoreless draw in the first half. The Axewomen snuck one past Katie Morgan in the 60th minute and the Axewomen would go on to win 1-0 to end the Tigers championship dreams. This would mark the first time since 2006 that the Tigers failed to make the AUS semifinal round.
This also marked the last time that Monica Diab, Jenna Goobie and Michelle Yates would suit up for the black and gold.
McGregor-Bales, Yates and Victoria Parkinson were all selected as AUS first team all-stars.
Men’s Hockey
The Tigers kicked off their weekend with a commanding 6-2 victory over the University of Moncton Friday night. After being tied 1-1 after the first period, the Tigers fired back with three goals to give themselves a comfortable 4-1 lead. Moncton would add a shorthanded goal late, but the Tigers held on to win 4-2. Fifth-year captain Pierre Vandall had a goal and an assist in the victory.
On Saturday, it just wasn’t the Tigers night as they fell 6-0 to the powerhouse UNB Varsity Reds at the Halifax Forum. Wendell Vye had 38 saves in the loss for the Tigers, who just couldn’t get things going on either end of the ice.
They’ll reignite the battle of Halifax on Wednesday night when they face the Saint Mary’s Huskies at 7:00pm.
Women’s Hockey
Elizabeth MacArthur, Kenzie MacPhee and Jesse Rietveld all scored to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead midway through the second period, but they let it slip away against the UPEI Panthers on Friday night as the Panthers scored three unanswered goals to top the Tigers 4-3.
On Sunday, Jessica Severeyns made 38 saves for the shutout as the Tigers blanked the University of Moncton 3-0. Sarah Robichaud had two goals for the Tigers, while Maggie Beaton added her third of the season.
MacArthur and Lisa MacLean now each have nine points on the season and are just one point off the league lead in scoring.
The Tigers will be back on the ice on Saturday at the University of Moncton. Puck drop is at 2:00pm.
Men’s Volleyball
The Tigers opened their regular season on a high-note as they won both games of a two-game set against the UNB Varsity Reds on the road this weekend. After splitting the first two sets on Saturday, the Tigers fought their way to win the last two sets to take the match 3-1 (25-12, 24-26, 27-25, 25-20). Adam Sandeson had a monster 19 kills in the match and Bryan Duquette, Kristen O’Brien, Connor Maessen and Alex Dempsey each had at least nine kills in the victory.
On Sunday, the Tigers won the first two sets, and then it took them 31 points to win a marathon of a third set to sweep the match 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 31-29). Duquette had 13 kills to pace the Tigers.
The Tigers will be back on the court in two weeks for their home opener against the Memorial Sea-Hawks on November 15 and 16.
Women’s Volleyball
After dominating the first set against the UNB Varsity Reds 25-12, the Tigers dropped the next three sets falling to the Varsity Reds 3-1 in their season opener on Saturday. Anna Dunn-Suen had 12 kills and 12 digs to lead the Tigers, while Marisa Mota had 15 digs of her own.
The Tigers captured their first victory of the young 2014-2015 season the next day with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-14) victory over the University of Moncton. Mota added another 14 digs on the day to lead the Tigers, while first-year Mieke Dumont had a team-high 15 kills in the match.
The Tigers will face the Acadia Axewomen on November 9th to finish their three-game road swing to start the season.
Swimming
The swim teams headed to UNB for the annual Amby Leger Invitational Swim Meet. Both teams came out on top after two days of competition, winning by over 100 points in the team standings, taking their second (of two) AUS Invitationals so far this season.
“The best part of the weekend competition was the fact that our swimmers raced so well and lifted to the challenges of the other teams,” said head coach Lance Cansdale. “I am really excited to see what we can do in a few weeks at the DAL AUS Meet in November."

The Tigers host an AUS Invitational meet November 22-23 at Dalplex. Heats start at 10am, with finals beginning at 4pm. All Tigers swim alumni are invited to a reception in the pool classroom following the finals on Saturday.
