Tigers Weekend Recap (Jan. 11‑13)

Women’s Basketball
DAL 73 @ ACA 67

Dal travelled to Acadia to battle it out in a four-point game to determine who would claim third place in the AUS standings. The Tigers came out strong and ready to play, earning an early lead against the Axewomen, but Acadia bounced back and led in the second and third quarters. In the final quarter, Dalhousie dominated with a 10-point difference and took home a 73-67 victory.

Men’s Basketball
DAL 57 @ ACA 79

Following the women’s victory, the men took to the court in Wolfville, also playing in a four-point game. The Tigers fought hard but fell short of the Axemen. Acadia had a steady lead in the first three quarters and Dal tried to turn the game around in the fourth quarter but couldn’t close the gap in time. The final score was 79-57 for the Axemen.

Men’s Hockey
DAL 1 @ STU 2; DAL 4 @ UdeM 0

Dalhousie started off the weekend in Fredericton, N.B. against St. Thomas on Friday night. Down 2-0 early in the third period, Dal refused to let up and Tiger Andrew Wigginton finally slid the puck past the STU goalie. Unfortunately, the Tigers couldn’t catch another break and lost 2-1. The following night Dal came out fierce against Moncton, striking early on, and continued to control the ice for the rest of the game. Netminder Bobby Nadeau, back for his first game after an injury in November, led the team to a 4-0 win.

Women’s Volleyball
DAL 3 @ ACA 0; CBU 0 @ DAL 3

The Tigers began their weekend on Saturday at Acadia, eager to increase their lead in the AUS standings. Dal played hard and controlled the court, earning a 3-0 victory. Cape Breton faced a tough Tigers team at Dalplex on Sunday afternoon, falling after three straight sets. Dal out-played the Capers with Subway Player of the Game Raessa Lalani leading the team with 11 kills. Setter Hilary Sears also had an outstanding weekend, recording a total of 56 assists.

Men’s and Women’s Swimming
Acadia Invitational

A strong start to the 2013 season at their first meet of the new year, the Tigers claimed both the men’s and women’s team titles, as well as first place in the combined team score. A few outstanding performances included first place victories by Katie Webster (800m free), Chris Reith (1500m free), Paige Crowell (100m breast), and Nik Taylor (100m breast).

Track and Field
Jump Start Moncton Open

In their first meet of the 2013 season, the track and field team travelled to Moncton, N.B. for the Moncton Open this past Saturday. Winning 12 events, the Tigers dominated the meet. Kari Beiswanger (60m hurdles), Rebecca Haworth (high jump), Sarah Taplin (long jump), Chantel Robbertse (long jump), Megan Beamish (triple jump), Liz MacDonald (weight throw), Jordan Bruce (long jump), Simon Watts (long jump and triple jump), Rob McCulloch (high jump and shot put) all finished at the top of the podium.
