Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

Congratulations to Krista Kesselring (History) whose article, “Negroes of the Crown: The Management of Slaves Forfeited by Grenadian Rebels, 1796-1831” (Journal of the Canadian Historical Association, 22, 2, 2011, 1-29) has received the award for the best article published by the JCHA in 2011. This is a “best of the best” award – the articles published in the JCHA are selected from among the strongest of approximately 250 papers delivered at the annual conference.

Congratulations to Carla Suarez (doctoral student, Political Science) upon being named a 2012 Trudeau Scholar. The most prestigious doctoral award of its kind in Canada, the Trudeau Scholarship supports brilliant social sciences and humanities doctoral students who are focused on researching and sharing innovative ideas that will help solve issues of critical importance to Canadians. Up to 15 scholarships are awarded each year.

Faculty of Computer Science

Congratulations to Srini Sampalli and his Alfred NFC (near field communications) team, including graduate students Musfiq Rahman, Ambica Pawan Khandavilli, and Karthik Palanivelu, for winning the Best of Canada Submission award at the Mobile Applications Forum. The idea behind Alfred is to link a user’s identity to a known location through NFC via cloud data – information stored on remote servers as opposed to the computer device being used. The competition was organized by the New Jersey Technology Council (NJTC) and was presented at Princeton University on June 14.

Faculty of Health Professions

Congratulations to Shaun Boe (Physiotherapy, Psychiatry) who has been awarded the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Research Scholarship for New Career Scientists. Dr. Boe has been given this prestigious scholarship in recognition of his work in examining basic and clinical aspects of rehabilitation to optimize functional recovery post-stroke, with mentor Gail Eskes (Psychiatry).

Congratulations to Naomi Campbell (student, Pharmacy) and Melissa Parke (student, Respiratory Therapy), two of the six students to win the Canadian Respiratory Health Professionals’ (CRHP) Student Excellence Awards in Respiratory Health.

Congratulations to David Gardner (Pharmacy, Psychiatry) upon being named Pharmacist of the Year by the Canadian Pharmacists Association.

Congratulations to Carolyn King (Physiotherapy) upon being awarded Life Membership by the Canadian Physiotherapy Association in recognition from her peers of her contributions to the physiotherapy profession and to the Canadian Physiotherapy Association through outstanding service for over 25 years at both local and national levels.

Congratulations to Gail Wainwright (Physiotherapy) upon receiving the Canadian Physiotherapy Association Mentorship Award.  This award is given in recognition of outstanding and enthusiastic contributions as a mentor of students and new physiotherapists.

Faculty of Science

Congratulations to Adrian Dauphinee (graduate student, Biology) who was awarded the Dr. Gerard T. Simon Award for the best oral presentation in biological sciences at the 39th Annual meeting of the Microscopical Society of Canada, entitled, “A microscopic view of the developmental morphology of the lace plant (Aponogeton madagascariensis).”

Congratulations to Tom Duck (Physics and Atmospheric Science) who was awarded the Neil J. Campbell Medal for Exceptional Volunteer Service for 2011. The citation read, “To Professor Thomas J. Duck of Dalhousie University, for his outstanding volunteer service to atmospheric science, and particularly to the Canadian ozone monitoring and research programs.  He has led a vocal and effective campaign to attract public attention to Canadian atmospheric research and the value of the Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Science. His extensive interaction with the media has focused the public’s attention, not only on the need to maintain ozone monitoring in Canada, but also on atmospheric climate change and the value of science in general, in its role of informing public policy and decision making.”

Congratulations to Brian K. Hall (Biology), the premier featured member for the Society for Craniofacial Genetics and Developmental Biology website. The purpose of that web section is to recognize the accomplishments of Society members that have made a major impact by advancing the scientific knowledge in craniofacial genetics and developmental biology. The website recognizes Dr. Hall for his contributions to evolutionary developmental and neural crest biology. He is one of the most influential scientists in the field of craniofacial skeletal biology.

Administration & Board of Governors

Congratulations to Wadih Fares (Board of Governors) upon being named one of the Top 50 CEOs in 2012 by Atlantic Business Magazine. Nominations are submitted by readers of ABM and nominees are judged according to their corporate, community and industry involvement, their company’s growth in recent years, and their responses to various managerial challenges.

Congratulations to Dalhousie staff in External Relations, Communications and Marketing and the Registrar’s Office upon winning five Prix D’Excellence Awards at the 2012 CCAE (Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education) national conference. The awards included a gold award for “Best Student Recruitment Initiative,” celebrating Dalhousie’s Canada Games-linked campaign titled, “The Games Brought You Here. Let Dalhousie Bring You Back.” The campaign was not only visible throughout Halifax during the 2011 Canada Winter Games, but was profiled throughout the Athletes Village, introducing thousands of Canada’s young athletes to what Dalhousie has to offer. The university also won four bronze awards for: best website (undergraduate recruitment micro-sites), best development initiative (transformative investment in Dalhousie’s School of Business), best fundraising case statement and campaign materials (Bold Ambitions:  The Campaign for Dalhousie), and best development event (Public launch, Bold Ambitions Campaign).
