Soccer
Fresh off an AUS title win, the women’s soccer team headed to McGill as the conference’s sole representative. Thursday’s quarter-final game against the University of Alberta got off to an excellent start, with Doriana Homerski scoring in the first half, but a sway in momentum saw Alberta score three quick goals early in the second half. Homerski scored again to pull Dal within one, but the equalizer never came despite an extraordinary effort from the black and gold. Joanna Blodgett had two assists and Taryn McKenna made nine saves.
The Tigers will return the majority of their players next season to defend their AUS title.
Cross country
The women’s cross country team headed to Quebec City this past weekend, having automatically qualified for the CIS championships courtesy of their AUS championship victory in October. Holly Van Gestel paced the black and gold, finishing 19th, the highest of any AUS competitor. Other leading Dal finishes included Ashley Ryer (29th), and Cara Groves (66th). Dalhousie finished 12th in the team standings, only 12 points out of the top 10. Matthew McNeil (46th) and Brent Addison (75th) participated on behalf of men’s cross country, having earned their way to the event with top 10 finishes at the AUS championships.
Basketball
Having opened their season at home with a 76-60 thrashing of Acadia, the women’s basketball team hit the court Saturday ready to do battle with StFX. After a tough third quarter the Tigers dug deep in the fourth, scoring an impressive 31 points to earn the 83-77 win. Courtney Thompson earned Subway Player of the Game honours.
Men’s basketball looked to rebound from their home opener 71-68 loss to Acadia with a strong performance against the StFX X-Men. Robert Nortmann put forth a dominate 30 point, nine rebound effort, but the Tigers fell short, losing 85-71.
The basketball teams head to Cape Breton this upcoming weekend for games on Friday and Saturday.
Volleyball
Hosts UNB and UdeM were unable to put a stop to the women’s volleyball team, falling 3-1 and 3-2 to the Tigers. Maggie Li was named Player of the Game against UNB and Louise Facca led the comeback against UdeM with a career high 23 kills, five blocks, and 1 ace.
Dal played UNB twice this past weekend in men’s volleyball action, sweeping Friday’s game 3-0 and losing Saturday’s match 3-1. Graeme Higgins led the black and gold in points over the weekend.
Both volleyball teams will play next on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 6/8 p.m. against MUN. The men’s game is their home opener.
Hockey
On Saturday the women’s hockey Tigers lost 2-1 in a shoot-out to UPEI and Sunday’s whirlwind game saw Dal lose 8-4 to MtA.
Dal hosts SMU on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m.
Men’s hockey took on the number one CIS ranked team, UNB, this past Friday and lost 9-2. Saturday’s home game saw a second loss, 6-3, to UPEI.
The next game for the men’s team is Friday, Nov. 18 when the black and gold host Acadia at 7 p.m.
