In a word, 'fiesta'

Alas, there was no world record just tons of fun

Arriba! Almost 600 students, staff and faculty took part in a massive Zumba fiesta Wednesday afternoon on Wickwire Field. The unofficial number of 575 participants fell just shy of setting what organizers hoped would be a Guinness World record breaking crowd. They needed at least 751 people to top the record of 750 set last week in Australia.

Despite the rainy Halifax weather and lower than expected turnout, participants were incredibly excited and energized. Much of this can be attributed to the contagious enthusiasm of certified Zumba instructor Richard Gormley. He led the crowd in a 31-minute routine of part aerobics class, part dance party and full-on good time.

According to Mr. Gormley, Zumba can be described in “one word, fiesta! It’s a party. It’s so much fun you don’t even realize you’re working out.” Judging by the crowd participation and interaction, those in attendance, both young and old were having a blast.

Zumba is a one-of-a-kind fitness experience that originated in Colombia. Participants take part in easy to follow dance-style routines set to the rhythms of upbeat Latin influenced music. The sultry Latin beats combined with the free-spirited moves make for an enjoyable experience.

Sound like a good time? Zumba classes are offered at Dalplex on Tuesdays from 1:15 p.m.- 2:15 p.m. and from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. On Thursdays, there is a regular Zumba class from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. as well as an aquafit Zumba class offered from 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.
