Kudos across campus

Dear readers of Kudos,

This is the last issue that will appear under my term as your Vice-President Academic and Provost. It has been wonderful to see the Dalhousie community adopt Kudos and really celebrate external recognition for outstanding achievements of Dalhousie faculty, staff, and students and board members too. I want to thank all the contributors over the years and I especially want to thank Kim Thomson who does all the work! We rely on our readers to provide information regarding awards and recognitions received. Keep those Kudos coming, we have so much excellence to celebrate.

Congratulations to Bishnu Acharya (PhD Candidate, Mechanical Engineering) for winning Best Student poster in the Renewable and Alternative Energy Category, with cash prize of $500, at the Nova Scotia Energy and Development Forum 2010 held in Halifax on May 26-27, 2010 for his poster, “Hydrogen enriched gas production from woody biomass through Chemical Looping Gasification.”

Congratulations to Camille Angus (MSc Candidate, Community Health & Epidemiology) upon winning the 2010 Gerontology Association of Nova Scotia (GANS) Award of Excellence. The Award is intended to recognize and promote student excellence in the field of aging studies and to encourage involvement in gerontology research in Nova Scotia.

Congratulations to Aramark Canada Ltd. (Dalhousie University’s food service contractor) upon being named one of Canada’s top 50 greenest employers for its Dalhousie employee-led team initiative setting the ambitious goal of purchasing 31 per cent of its food locally, reaching close to 50 per cent during the peak growing season.

Congratulations to Thomas Barry (Medicine) upon being awarded the Order of Merit from the New Brunswick Medical Society at its annual Celebration of Medicine recently held in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. The Order of Merit was introduced to provide recognition to those members of the Medical Society who have made an “outstanding” contribution to organized medicine in the province. This is the society’s highest award and there is no requirement that the award be presented annually.

Congratulations to Robert Bortolussi (Microbiology & Immunology) upon receiving the Member Recognition Award from the Canadian Paediatric Society for his exceptional leadership during the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic.

Congratulations to Amy Brennan Hughes (resident, Family Medicine) upon receiving the Iype/Wilfred Resident Award from the New Brunswick Medical Society at its annual Celebration of Medicine recently held in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. This award was established to recognize outstanding achievement during residency training in New Brunswick.

Congratulations to Carol Camfield and Peter Camfield (Pediatrics) 2010 recipients of the Canadian Paediatric Society Career Research Award. The biannual award recognizes the career of an outstanding and accomplished researcher or researchers working on an aspect of pediatric research in Canada. The Camfields were recognized for the significant contribution they have made to pediatric research in Canada.

Congratulations to Heather Castleden (Resource & Environmental Studies) upon receiving the Julian M Szeicz Award from the Canadian Association of Geographers. This award recognizes research achievement and career potential by a Canadian geographer at an early career stage. The purpose of the award is to foster the development of geographical studies of Canada and to provide recognition of recently established geographical practitioners. Dr. Castleden received the award in recognition of her contribution to the geography of environment, health and Indigenous community-based research.

Congratulations to Darrell Cochrane (Financial Services) who was awarded the Ken Clements Distinguished Administrator Award by the Canadian Association of University Business Officers, CAUBOs most prestigious honour. It recognizes an administrator who has made an extraordinary contribution to the advancement of higher education administration and has demonstrated outstanding leadership in CAUBO and/or regional groups, thereby facilitating the achievement of CAUBO objectives and goals.

Congratulations to Dalhousie’s Communications and Marketing office upon receiving two CASE (Council for the Advancement and Support of Education) Circle of Excellence Awards. Dalhousie was chosen from 21 entries to receive a gold award in the Special Program Publications Packages category. Other winners in the category included the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and the University of Texas at Austin. Dalhousie also received a bronze award in the Individual Public Relations and Community Relations Projects category (25 entries). Other winners included Bunker Hill Community College, the Virginia Community College System and Syracuse University. Both of Dalhousie’s awards recognized efforts associated with Dalhousie’s Environment, Sustainability and Society program.

Congratulations to Fred Fountain (Chancellor) upon receiving the Order of Canada for his “volunteer service, leadership and generosity.”  The Order of Canada was established in 1967 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and is the centerpiece of Canada’s honours system.

Congratulations to Jill Grant (Planning) on winning this year’s Canadian Institute of Planners annual Award for Planning Excellence, in the Planning Publications category, for her article “Experiential Planning:  a Practitioner’s Account of Vancouver’s Success.”  These awards honour planning projects judged on their excellence, innovation, impact on the profession, implementation potential, and overall presentation.

Congratulations to Joanne Gusella (Clinical Psychology & Psychiatry) and Stephanie Casey (Psychiatry), and the rest of the IWK Eating Disorder Clinic Team which was selected as recipient of the Award for Excellence in Patient and Family Centred Care at the IWK Health Centre. Along with their role in working with families, and consulting with other teams across the Maritimes, this team is actively involved in educating residents, including psychiatry, psychology, and medicine in an evidence-based family centred treatment, called the Maudsley Family Therapy, for youth who develop an eating disorder.

Congratulations to Matthew Harding (Engineering) who recently won First Place in the poster competition at the 2010 International Conference on Powder Metallurgy and Particulate Materials. The Conference was held in Hollywood Florida, June 27-30, 2010.

Congratulations to the recipients of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Region 5 (Atlantic provinces) awards: Charles Maxner (Medicine and Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences), selected as the 2010 Mentor of the Year; and Thomas Coonan (Anesthesia) and Pamela Forsythe (student affairs advisor for DMNB) who were named as Specialists of the Year.

Congratulations to Theresa Myra (Science Co-op/Dean's Office, Faculty of Science) for being presented with two awards by the Canadian Association of Career Educators and Employers (CACEE) at its national conference in June 2010. Ms. Myra was awarded the New Member Recognition Award presented to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding contribution by a new member of the association, as well as a Volunteer Recognition Award for her involvement, efforts and initiative in furthering the aims of the association.

Congratulations to Andrew Roger (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), recipient of the 2010 Seymour H. Hutner Prize from the International Society of Protistologists (originally founded as the Society of Protozoologists). This Prize is awarded annually to an outstanding scientist in the field of Protozoology who is recognized on an international level and is not more than 15 years from the Ph.D. or equivalent degree.

Congratulations to Preston Smith (Medicine) upon receiving the Dr. Donald Morgan Service Award from the New Brunswick Medical Society at its annual Celebration of Medicine recently held in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. This award was established to pay tribute to the late Dr. Donald Morgan and to recognize and celebrate the contribution made by a Medical Society member in at least one of the following areas:  education, research, health promotion or humanitarian service.

Congratulations to Shirley Tillotson (History) upon being awarded the Hilda Neatby Prize for best English-language article in women’s and gender history published in Canada in 2009, for her article, “The family as tax dodge: partnership, individuality, and gender in the personal income tax Act, 1942 to 1970,” Canadian Historical Review 90, 3 (2009), 391-425. This prize is awarded annually by the Canadian Committee on Women’s History.

Congratulations to Donald Weaver (Biomedical Engineering Medicine, Chemistry, Medicine) for being one of the few non-chemical engineers to be awarded the coveted Bantrel Award, one of the premier awards granted by the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering. The award is given yearly for outstanding contributions to Canadian chemical engineering for innovative design or production activities.

Congratulations to Natalie Yanchar (Surgery and Emergency Medicine) upon receiving the Victor Marchessault Advocacy Award from the Canadian Paediatric Society for her contributions to injury prevention legislation and guidelines.
