The cream of Dalhousie's student-athlete crop were honoured at the 11th annual Academic All-Canadian Luncheon. A total of 78 varsity athletes were recognized in the presence of peers, professors and parents for their academic accomplishments according to standards set by the national university sport authority, Canadian Interuniversity Sport.
To qualify as an Academic All-Canadian, a student-athlete must maintain a grade point average (GPA) of 80 per cent or better over the academic year, while competing in a varsity sport. All 14 of Dalhousie’s varsity teams were represented in the awards ceremony, showcasing the breadth of academic success exhibited by Tigers student-athletes. The women’s hockey team led Dalhousie’s varsity pack with 10 Academic All-Canadians from the 2008-09 roster.
A highlight of the luncheon was an address from four-time Academic All-Canadian Andrew Sullivan from Riverview, N.B. Mr. Sullivan, whose name was recently put forward to the Rhodes Scholarship nomination committee by Dalhousie President Dr. Tom Traves, gave thanks on behalf of the student-athletes. A well-spoken fourth year engineering student, he talked about the involvement of family, academic mentors, coaches and university staff in providing student-athletes the opportunity to compete for Dalhousie University and enhance their student experience.
