- July 7, 2009

Congratulations to Jamie Baillie, Wadih Fares, Nancy MacCready-Williams, and Jim Spatz (members of the Dalhousie Board of Governors) for being recognized as three of the top 50 CEOs in Atlantic Canada by Atlantic Business Magazine.

The Frenches in their finery in Finland.

Congratulations to Andrew French (Biomedical Engineering Medicine) upon receiving an honorary doctorate (Filosofian tohtori honoris causa) from the University of Oulu, Finland.  Doctoral conferment ceremonies are held at five-year intervals in Finland.  Academic dress is a black tailcoat, and doctoral degree recipients receive a doctoral hat and sword (so, watch your step around “Sir” Andrew!).

Congratulations to Dr. Stan Kutcher and the Sun Life Financial Chair in Adolescent Mental Health Team (Psychiatry) whose Teen Mental Health website won silver at the Web Health Awards and a Gemstone Award of Excellence in Web Communications. The Web Health Awards recognizes the best Web-based health-related content for consumers and professionals. The Atlantic Gemstone Awards recognizes those who demonstrate innovation and creativity in communications.

Congratulations to Susan Mansour (Pharmacy) and Anne Godden Webster (Health Professions, Deans’ Office) upon being presented with Ambassador awards by Destination Halifax for their efforts in bringing the Collaborating Across Borders (CAB II) Conference to Halifax. The Conference was hosted by the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, and Health Professions and the Health Law Institute, and attracted more than 400 participants from around the world.

Congratulations to Emily Murray (student, Health & Human Performance) for winning Best Poster, entitled, “Examining the impact of a cancer retreat on the lives on young adult cancer survivors,” at the Meeting at the Crossroads: Student Research in Health Conference.  Crossroads is a scientific conference dedicated to student presentations on research related to any and all aspects of health. The conference is organized for students by the graduate students of Dalhousie University’s School of Health and Human Performance. (Supervisor:  Lynne Robinson)

Congratulations to Kendra Sauerteig (student, Biology) upon winning the Canadian Botanical Association’s Regional Undergraduate Award for her oral presentation, entitled, “Actin microfilament dynamics and programmed cell death in the lace plant (Aponogeton madagascariensis),” at the Atlantic Undergraduate Biology Conference held in March at the Agricultural College in Truro. Ms. Sauerteig also won second place for her oral presentation, entitled “Tracking actin microfilament dynamics during programmed cell death in the lace plant (Aponogeton madagascariensis),” at the 16th annual Northeastern Biological Graduate Student Conference (NBGSC) also held in March at Saint Mary’s University.  (Supervisor:  Arunika Gunawardena)

Congratulations to Jessie Sheppard (student, Health & Human Performance) for winning the Best Graduate Oral Presentation, entitled, “It’s good once you get there: Young rural women’s experiences with accessing specialized health care,” at the Meeting at the Crossroads:  Student Research in Health Conference. Crossroads is a scientific conference dedicated to student presentations on research related to any and all aspects of health. The conference is organized for students by the graduate students of Dalhousie University’s School of Health and Human Performance. (Supervisor: Lois Jackson)

Congratulations to Shirley Tillotson (History) whose book, Contributing Citizens: Modern charitable fundraising and the making of the welfare state, was shortlisted for the Canadian Historical Association’s Sir John A. Macdonald prize for the best book in Canadian History of 2008. Unfortunately (or fortunately, according to her) Shirley didn’t win the prize – it went to an excellent book written by one of her graduate school profs – the acorn doesn’t fall far from the tree Shirley!

Congratulations to Anita Unruh (Health Professions) for receiving the Purdue Pharma/Canadian Pain Society’s award for Excellence in Interprofessional Pain Education.  This award is given annually to a CPS member who has demonstrated excellence in interprofessional pain education (IPE) in an accredited university setting, a community hospital setting or in a setting with various community healthcare professionals. This award is consistent with the CPS initiative to foster and enhance IPE and pain awareness across the country (but this Kudos does not hurt at all!).

Congratulations to Harrison Wright (PhD student, Biology) whose micrograph was selected for the cover image of American Journal of Botany May 2009 issue (see http://www.amjbot.org/content/vol96/issue5/cover.shtml).  In addition, Mr. Wright’s video, “Dying to Live:  programmed cell death in lace plant cells,” has been awarded an Honorable Mention in the ChloroFilms video contest, May 2009. (Supervisor:  Arunika Gunawardena)
