Your thoughts on Facebook and online study

- March 12, 2008

A first-year student at Ryerson University faces 147 academic charges for administering a Facebook group allowing his Chemistry classmates to swap tips on homework questions. Chris Avenir, 18, faced an expulsion hearing before the school's engineering faculty appeals committee. The university believes that the group explicitly solicited solutions to the questions. Students argue that Avenir is being unfairly singled out for what they believe differs little from an offline study group or tutoring session.

Should universities be more tolerant of online study given the rise of platforms like Facebook? Or should students be more careful when discussing course material on the Internet?
