Are you up for conquering the world?

Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Management is hosting Halifax’s largest game of Risk on Monday, Sept. 17 on the Studley campus quad. Students are invited to sign up and play.

Game play starts around 9 a.m. with a large knockout round. The number of players is whittled down from around 300 to just a few throughout the morning.

Not only do winners get to take over the world, they can win big money. Students can win $5,000 towards the cost of tuition.

“It involves a lot of strategy and planning ahead and constantly keeping your eye on the competition,” says Krista McLellan, a third-year commerce student who helped organize the Risk tourney. “It’s a pretty good metaphor for what we’re learning about,”

The tournament, which includes a barbecue and entertainment by the band Little Fish, is sponsored by Aon, an insurance and risk-management company. To pre-register, head to: www.aon.ca/risktournament.

Risk facts:

  • Risk was invented by a French movie director in the 1950s
  • Players control armies and attempt to capture territories from other players
  • Risk requires strategy, negotiation and planning
  • There are different versions of Risk, including Risk: 2210 A.D., Risk: the Lord of the Rings and Risk: Star Wars Clone Wars Edition
