Many of our graduates have faced adversity in their lives before coming to Dalhousie, but very few have faced the challenges that Dut Deng has had to overcome. Now graduating with his Bachelor of Science degree (Honours in Economics and Statistics), Dut fled the civil war in southern Sudan as a child and began his primary education in a refugee camp in Ethiopia. "We had no rooms, no stationery, no books...I remember studying under a tree and having to use the dirt on the ground to write," he said. Dut continued his study in refugee camps and eventually was sponsored by the World University Service of Canada (WUSC) to come to Dalhousie. "It feels great," he says about his accomplishment. "All of my life, I have always had that optimism that one day I would have a university degree."
