MedTech Talent Accelerator


This program is intended to be an add-on professional development component to your MASc or PhD degree program at the School of Biomedical Engineering, and the goal of the program is to better prepare graduate students to be ‘Industry ready’ for work in medical technology companies in Canada.

The training program is known as the “MedTech Talent Accelerator” and is a partnership between the BME programs at Dalhousie University, Ryerson University, McGill University, the University of Calgary, University of British Columbia. It is also a partnership with MedTech Canada and Life Sciences Nova Scotia, MedTech Canada is the national consortium of medical device companies, of which our local organization BioNova is a supporting partner.

There are two parts to the national program, one which is available to all graduate students (no application necessary) known as Explore MedTech, and the 2nd which requires application known as Experience MedTech.

What are in the programs ?

Explore MedTech:

  • A seminar series from industry and academic leaders in medical technology
  • Engage in a fun medical industry technology hackathon – a rapid learning experience in filling a gap in medical technology sector.

Experience MedTech:

  • A paid internship at a Canadian Medical Technology company - we help students secure their first R&D internship in the MedTech industry as they complete their Master's or Ph.D. programs.
  • An online professional development course contributed and approved by industry members – full of industry focused content: Patenting, working in a medical technology regulatory environment, bioethics, clinical trials, device certification, equity, diversity and inclusion in the medical device industry and more.
  • Earn the MedTech Accelerate Certificate recognized by MedTech Canada.
  • Participation in Explore MedTech is a required part for Experience MedTech.

Who should apply to the Experience MedTech program?

  • Currently enrolled SBME graduate students at Dalhousie University
  • For the pilot year student can enquire about the program and we can help you with your application.
  • Students normally will have completed or nearly completed their coursework, and are in the writing phase of your thesis by: 
  1. December 31st Confirm this with your supervisor. You then should be able to take on a full-time R&D internship with a MedTech company from January 2nd for a 4-month or 8-month period.
  2. April 30th Confirm this with your supervisor. You then should be able to take on a full-time R&D internship with a MedTech company from May 1st for a 4-month or 8-month period.
  3. August 31st Confirm this with your supervisor. You then should be able to take on a full-time R&D internship with a MedTech company from September 1st for a 4-month or 8-month period.
  4. Be ready to accept interviews and internships offered by our MedTech company partners. Students are only allowed to decline a maximum of TWO interview requests and a maximum of ONE internship offer with full justification. After this, the MedTech Talent Accelerator reserves the right to withdraw the student's application from the Experience MedTech program.
