Predicting Risk & Remand: A Legal Education Seminar

Join the East Coast Prison Justice Society and the Schulich Law Criminal Justice Coalition for a legal education seminar. Bringing together prosecution and defence counsel, academics, and students, the seminar will critically explore the implications of risk prediction for bail, release conditions, and pre-trial detention.

Against the backdrop of rising remand rates and new legislation like Bill C-14, this discussion will examine what research tells us about the evidence used to predict risk in bail decision-making, and the uncertainty inherent to predicting future behaviour.

Speakers include:

  • Dr. Anthony Doob, Professor Emeritus, Centre for Criminology & Sociolegal Studies, University of Toronto
  • Dr. Nicole Myers, Associate Professor, Department of Psychology, Queen's University
  • Robert Wright, Assistant Professor, Department of Criminology, Saint Mary's University
