Social Anthropology PhD student Evan Curley has been awarded the 2024 Mushkat Memorial Essay Prize for his essay, “The False Threat of Moderation: Sustaining Traditional Fishing Livelihoods.” Evan will present a talk on this essay later in April, date TBD. Many thanks to Karen, Evan’s supervisor, for supporting Evan’s submission.
MA Sociology student Nic Kuzmochka has been awarded the 2024 Irving and Jeanne Glovin Award for his essay, “‘Oh to be Queer, Kinky, and Free’: Interrogating the Nature of Respect and Respectability Politics.” Many thanks to Fiona, Nic’s supervisor, for supporting Nic’s application.
We are also delighted to announce that SOSA PhD student Kat Daly and MA student Matt Cottrell placed in the 2024 FASS essay competitions. Kat won the second place prize for the 2024 Irving and Jeanne Glovin Award competition for her essay, “A Good Life Without Money: Housing, Welfare and Basic Income in Halifax, Nova Scotia.” Matt won the third place prize for the 2024 Irving and Jean Gloving Award competition for their essay entitled, “Embracing the Queer: A Case for Arts-Based Education for Good Human Conduct.” Many thanks to Lindsay and Margaret for supporting Kat’s and Matt’s submissions, respectively.
